Central Park is to New York as the sun is to the solar system. Without its 843 acres of meadering paths, sprawling green lawns, tranquil lakes, fountains, gardens, waterfalls, a carousel, a zoo, and a castle, New Yorkers might be a lot less sane. Every day thousands of joggers, cyclists, in-line skaters, and walkers make their way around this urban oasis in the middle of town. Joining them are horse riders, softball players, ice skaters, roller skaters, rock climbers, croquet and tennis players, bird-watchers, sun-worshippers, boaters, chess and checkers aficionados, theater- and concert-goers, and skateboarders. It's a slice of old New York, where birds, trees, and people coexist against a backdrop of skyscrapers and away from the cacophony of traffic. New York is not in a hurry here, and you shouldn't be either.
