Although the fitness center here is not quite as polished as the one at the Vanderbilt YMCA in Midtown East, you can't beat this Y for value, location, and atmosphere. Two blocks from Lincoln Center and a short jaunt from Central Park, it's housed in a building that looks like a Spanish cloister, with gargoyles adorning its arched neo-Byzantine entrance. Rooms are as tiny as jail cells; those with private bath cost extra.

If Price Matters - Go For It

Lots of little niggly problems attended our stay at the YMCA at 5 West 63rd Street in the summer of 2007, some of them related to the fact that renovations were underway. Yet, you need to know that newly renovated rooms (without bathrooms - we could not get one with) are poky and lacking in space in which to both move and store things. How four adults can survive for more than a day or two in one of these cells is beyond me (there were only three of us and we barely fit). In addition, and this was again in the newly renovated sector, the quality of the recent workmanship and the choice of materials ranges from faulty to poor. We found the ostensibly attractive self-contained shower/toilet facilities to be literally falling apart after only a few months use. Faucets broken, clothes hooks fallen off, shower doors unhinged, main doors not locking, soap holders kaput: a veritable litany of minor disasters that does not auger well for the conditions that might be found in say, early 2008!! Next to this you can put the very positive attributes of great location, nice neighbourhood, local shopping, swimming pool and fitness centre, cafeteria, left luggage, good 24 hr security and so on. For the price, it's a go, but just be aware that it is no hotel, by any stretch of the imagination.
