High Falls
The tiny hamlet of High Falls is a weekender's delight. Cool shops, old buildings, excellent restaurants, and cozy places to stay nestle beside the ancient locks of the Delaware and Hudson Canal. From 1828 to 1898 the canal connected Pennsylvania's coal mines to the Hudson River. "Canawlers" also shipped bluestone for New York City's sidewalks and Rosendale cement for the Brooklyn Bridge. You can see some of the locks right in town; a brochure (available at the D&H Canal Museum) outlines a walking tour. In fall, pick your own apples or taste freshly pressed cider at one of the local orchards.
