Kah-Nee-Ta Resort and Casino

Kah-Nee-Ta Resort and Casino Review

Kah-Nee-Ta means "root digger" in one of the reservation's native tongues, but this modern destination resort doesn't really match that humble moniker. Built around hot mineral springs that feed huge open-air swimming pools, Kah-Nee-Ta has an isolated, exclusive feel that makes it a tempting escape from bustling Portland or Bend. The casino is third-tier Vegas, but the rooms are comfortable, and the staff is friendly and helpful. Best of all are the sweeping, sparse desert panoramas; restorative mineral pools; and pristine juniper-scented air, a form of aromatherapy in itself. Spa Wanapine has massage, reflexology, facials, and other New Age treatments. The Juniper Room serves decent food with a distinct regional inflection; casual dining is available in the Chinook Room. The upscale suites have tile fireplaces and hot tubs, big-screen TVs, and king-size beds. An RV park and wood-frame, canvas-covered tepees (bring your own bedroll) form "The Village" around the hot springs below the main lodge. It's a half-mile away from the lodge and has 30 rooms and 20 tepees, with a shuttle carrying guests between the two sites. Kah-Nee-Ta also has a water slide, kayak rentals, and maps to nearby hiking trails.
