Gibbes Museum of Art Review

Experience Charleston's history through art. Housed in a beautiful Beaux-Arts building, the Gibbes boasts a collection of 10,000 works, principally American with a local connection. Each year a dozen special exhibitions, often of contemporary art, attract a more youthful audience. Different objects from the museum's permanent collection are always on view in "The Charleston Story," offering a nice overview of the region's history, and the gift shop is exceptional. The museum is slated to close for renovations in 2014, so call ahead before visiting.

    Delightful small museum

A small but charming art museum with a very good collection containing a few works by name artists (Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns, Benjamin West, Gilbert Stuart). But the works by lesser-knowns are of high quality, including several miniatures, prints, and drawings. A good bit of the work here has a local connection, either painted by a Charleston artist or depicting something/someone from the city. Well worth a visit.
