Mepkin Abbey is an active Trappist monastery overlooking the Cooper River. The site was the former plantation home of Henry Laurens and, later, of publisher Henry Luce and wife Clare Boothe Luce. You can tour the gardens and abbey or even stay here for a spiritual retreat -- one- to six-night stays are open to anyone, including married couples, willing to observe the rules of the abbey and who don't mind spartan accommodations. (Reservations are required, and donations are greatly appreciated). The gift shop carries items the monks have produced -- soaps, honey, and sweets -- and eggs farmed on the premises. Tours depart at 11:30 and 3.
