You may not delight in the decor—vinyl booths repaired with duct tape and walls muddled with old photographs—but for those venturing inside Martha Lou's Kitchen, a bit of Charleston heritage awaits. Of course, the chicken, perfectly cooked to golden brown, and those fried pork chops aren't bad, either. Martha Lou Gadsden has made her pink cinder-block building into a palace of soul food, serving some of the city's finest. The tireless octogenarian works all day, preparing collard greens, giblet rice, lima beans, and, yes, even chitterlings. Just a chat with Miss Martha Lou is enough to make the trip worthwhile.
