The region's major newspaper is the daily Asheville Citizen-Times. In the eastern end of the mountains, many people also get the Charlotte Observer or other newspapers from the Piedmont. Most mountain towns have a small weekly newspaper, and Waynesville has a newspaper, the Mountaineer, that is published three times a week.
The dominant television station in the mountains is WLOS-TV, an ABC affiliate. The area is also served by TV stations in Greenville and Spartanburg, SC. WCQS Radio in Asheville (it plays classical music) and WNCW in Rutherford-Spindale (eclectic mix of country and popular music) are the region's two public radio stations.
Asheville, as the mountain region's cultural center, has a number of local and chain bookstores, but there are good independent bookshops in many mountain towns. The largest chain bookstore in the region is Barnes & Noble in Asheville. If you love bookstores, don't miss Malaprop's, the largest and best indepedent bookstore in the mountains, and one of the best in the entire South.
