Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive
Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive Review
Although it extends only 30 miles, you can easily spend a full day taking in the views of the Rio Grande along this popular route. If you don't mind a little grate in your gait from the gravel that blankets the road, you can make this drive a loop by starting out at the west park entrance and turning southwest onto Old Maverick Road (unpaved) for 12.8 mi to the Santa Elena Canyon overlook—where you can get a taste of the lowland desert. If you're in an RV, don't even attempt Old Maverick Road. The road isn't paved and is rough going in some spots.
