Newspaper Rock Recreation Site

Newspaper Rock Recreation Site Review

On your drive into the Needles District, stop to admire one of the West's most famous rock-art sites. The Native American etchings span a period of about 2,000 years. Early explorers called the site Newspaper Rock because they believed that the rock, crowded with drawings, constituted a written language with which early people communicated. Archaeologists now agree the petroglyphs do not represent language. This is one of many "newspaper rocks" throughout the Southwest.
