Whether you eat at the bustling bar or in the dining room upstairs, you'll find an imaginative, generous interpretation of modern American cooking. Start with the blue crab fritters, then move on to entrées such as pecan-crusted trout. The warm, flourless, chocolate-macadamia nut waffle with vanilla ice cream is classic. Carlyle is especially known for its fantastic weekend brunch, where you can pair brioche French toast with a glass of Virginia sparkling cider. You can even buy a loaf of bread at the restaurant's own bakery, the Best Buns Bread Company, next door.

    Fun and tasty

    Carylye was fun. You can phone ahead and get on the waiting list. (Good idea as they don't do reservations on busy nights and it was jammed on a Friday night.) When you arrive they hand you a handsized gizmo that, when your name comes up buzzes and lights up like something at the fair grounds. Felt like we'd won a prize! Dined in the upstairs dining room which is lovely and spacious -- and much quieter than the bar on the main floor. We tried the Fodor recommended crab fritters and they were great. I had the parmesan crusted flounder and my husband the special of the day. We both enjoyed our meals and it was all reasonably priced -- not forgetting that this is the DC area. Good food, good service. Definitely worth a try.
