Having a car is advisable in Richmond and Fredericksburg. It's essential for touring outlying attractions, including historic homes and battlefields, and the Northern Neck. Avoid the major interstates such as 64 and 95 during morning and evening rush hours if possible.

Richmond is at the intersection of interstates 95 and 64, which run north-south and east-west, respectively. U.S. 1/301 also runs north-south past the city. To drive to Fredericksburg from Washington, D.C., take I-95 south to Route 3 (Exit 130-A), turn left, and follow the signs. The drive takes about an hour one-way; add 45 minutes during rush hour. To reach the Northern Neck from Fredericksburg, either take Route 3 South or U.S. 17 to Route 360, crossing the Rappahannock River at the Tappahannock Bridge. Driving north from Williamsburg and Hampton roads, cross the river at Greys Point by driving north on Route 3. Access from Maryland and Washington, D.C., is over the Potomac River toll bridge on Route 301. If you cross there, you shortly come upon Virginia's Potomac Gateway Visitors Center in King George.
