A dramatically lighted old-growth Douglas fir snag greets you at the entrance to this spa hotel. Timbers salvaged from a 19th-century warehouse lend rustic counterpoints to the lodge's sleek modern design. A stone fireplace dominates the lobby, and contemporary Native American prints and sculptures by area artists adorn the walls and gardens. Each large guest room -- categorized by size and amenities as "Nice, Nicer, and Nicest" -- has a gas-lighted stone fireplace, oversize soaking tub, CD and DVD players, and bathroom with freestanding stone sinks. Nicer rooms have a courtyard set over the river; the Nicest rooms add this plus a jetted tub. The famous spa provides beauty and rejuvenating treatments, and the Barking Frog restaurant is one of the Northwest's top dining venues. It's pretty far from town, but is a favorite of visitors and Seattleites alike because of its proximity to many wineries, including Chateau Ste. Michelle. Along with trying the Barking Frog, a dinner at the equally famous and nearby Herbfarm restaurant is a must.
