To reach the San Juan Islands from Seattle, head north on I-5 to Exit 230, then follow signs west on Highway 20 to the ferry terminal in Anacortes. Be prepared for long auto lines at all hours between May and September, and weather delays throughout the year. Many accommodations arrange pick-up at their island's docks, which costs less and allows you to walk on the ferry immediately. Island roads have one or two lanes, but most of the main thoroughfares are paved. However, beware the distractions of sweeping water views, and be on the lookout for deer and rabbits.

There are few car-rental agencies on the islands. Angie's is the only office on Lopez. M&W is the only agency on Orcas, and they also have an office on San Juan Island. Island Petroleum Services rents cars on Orcas from June through September. Susan's Mopeds rents cars and mopeds on Orcas Island from June through September, as well as on San Juan Island at Friday Harbor from March through October and at Roche Harbor from July through Labor Day. Summer rates run $50 to $70 per day.
