In 1950 Don Alberto Zuccardi, a civil engineer, developed a more modern system of irrigation for his vineyards in Maipú and later in Santa Rosa. He and his son Sebastian continue to push boundaries and play with new approaches to viniculture, and have been called by Decanter magazine among the top 5 most influential personalities in Argentine wine. Their newest innovation, the Cava de Turísmo, is an air-conditioned cave where you can join tours of the bodega led by family members or an oenologist. A soft, soothing light glows on cobblestone floors, concrete walls, and warm woodwork in the tasting room and gift shop. Outside, walk through the neatly labeled vineyards to the garden restaurant for a wine-tasting lunch or tea. During harvest time (February and March), Vení a Cosechar (Come and Harvest) is a program for wannabe grape-pickers that includes an early-morning pickup at your hotel, breakfast, and a morning of hard work in the vineyards (guided by agronomists and oenologists). This is followed by a wine tasting and lunch. From June to August a similar program teaches the art of pruning. Cooking classes, music, balloon rides, and art exhibits are also offered.
