Mercado Modelo

Mercado Modelo Review

From the 17th to the 19th century, slaves were kept in chains in the basement of this building upon arriving from Africa. The market has seen many changes since then. Today it's a convenient place to buy handicrafts. Bargaining is expected here for goods like cachaça (sugarcane liquor), cashews, pepper sauce, cigars, leather goods, hammocks, musical instruments, and semiprecious stones. Repentistas (impromptu folksingers) and fortune-tellers gather outside. The market is open Monday to Saturday 9-7, Sunday 9-2.
