Alto Atacama Desert Lodge & Spa Review

It's hard to imagine a place that feels more "away from it all" than Alto Atacama. Surrounded by the Salt Mountains Range (Cordillera de la Sal) in the midst of Chile's Atacama Desert, this 42-room luxury retreat is an unlikely oasis in the midst of a landscape that seems to extend endlessly in every direction. Guest rooms are simple but spacious and feature comfortable beds, local crafts as decoration, and private terraces. Healthy meals showcasing local cuisine and wines are served in the main dining room or on one of two outdoor patios, and six outdoor pools and a world-class spa help make this a true getaway. The hotel can organize desert excursions tailored to all skill and fitness levels, from mountain biking and trekking to van trips and astronomy tours. Rates might invoke some sticker shock, but prices do include all meals and drinks, daily excursions, transfers to and from Calama Airport, spa access, and use of mountain bikes. A bed-and-breakfast-only rate is also available during low season.
