Fodor's Review:

The extraordinary location of this hotel -- in the midst of towering eucalyptus and acacia trees thought to be more than a century old -- is unforgettable. It's a pleasure to drink your morning coffee in the lush garden under one of the oversize umbrellas. The rooms here are simple but bright, decorated with pale creams and tans. The owner's collection of old carriages gives the hotel a quirky personality.

A Walnut Creek hotel to visit San Francisco

Ok, that's a stretch: it only takes a $10US taxi 13 minutes to get downtown from here. It's the fact that it's on auto row next to a bunch of cheesy restaurants that's annoying. That said, this place is awesome, if you prefer ambiance to creature comforts in your room. There's a sweet scent of decay in the faces of the employees, working well for the few guests they have, along with a fantastic garden and pool and courtyard. So go here if you don't mind a small shabby room and being out of town -- it's very relaxing, and accomodating.
