a visit to Qatar / Doha
Why? My daughter and grandkids live in Thailand - we live in Atlanta. We could meet in Doha (non-stop flights for both parties). But do we want to? The grandkids are young so a visit to a cultural capital of Europe would probably not be best at this point of their lives but we want a place to meet up and chill that does not involve several flights. Can any one provide a trip report or reason to go to a resort in Doha?

I'm in Doha right now, and I'm having a nice time. I think it's a good spot for a stopover if you can get a cheap airfare. The question is when. If it's before September, I'm not sure I'd recommend it. The weather will be monstrously hot, and the sun may be too strong for the kids to be outdoors. Not all the hotels in Doha have beaches, so keep that in mind. You may want to look at Sharq Village, which seems to be the nicest beach resort right in Doha (near the souks). I'm staying at the Sheraton, which has a big pool and a decent manmade beach. There are some other choices in the area, too. Hotels here are not terribly expensive, so you can get a really nice 5-star hotel for well under $200 a night (Sharq Village for under $300 sometimes). Hotels are more expensive on weekends, when families come to stay in them to use the pools and restaurants.
I'd be happy to answer any specific questions you have if I can. I'm here until Friday, and then I'm headed back to NYC.
