Aswan Hotels & Luxor Hotels

Hello fellow Egypt lovers.....

Lady Egypt has suggested the Movenpick in Aswan and Steinberger in Luxor. Has anyone had experiences with these?

I do like nice hotels and am happy to upgrade to something else if these 2 are crummy.

(I asked this question on the bottom of someones post as they were talking about hotels, so apologies if you read the same question twice).

Thanks

I stayed at the Movenpick when I went to Egypt in 2005, and I found it an OK hotel. It was still undergoing renovations when I was there, so the pool was closed. The breakfast buffet was really good, but the other food in the restaurant was just ok (I only ate there once). But when my partner was sick and had to rest for a day, they really went out of the way to take care of him, which we appreciated. The only negative is that the hotel is on an island in the Nile, so you have to take a ferry to get there. It's not a long trip, but you might have to wait 5 or 10 minutes for a boat. The location is otherwise very convenient and right in the center of town near the market.

I don't know the Steinberger in Luxor, so I can't speak to it. I stayed in the Winter Palace (pavilion addition) and thought it was great, especially the extensive pool area and gardens.

The Steinberger is one of my favorites in Egypt. Good rooms (spend extra for a Nile facing room) and the restaurants are exotic and superb. This from about 2 years ago when it was still a Meridien (or was it Millennium?).

We stayed at the Steigenberger in Luxor and thought it was very nice -- not on the level of the Four Seasons, more like Marriott/Westin-level, I guess. The lobby is attractive, the rooms are large, although the furnishings could probably stand to be updated, the bathrooms very nice, the pool and pool area great (we spent one whole day at the pool, which has shady and sunny areas, and as I recall poolside service, and ate at the poolside restaurant which is very good). We didn't eat at the hotel restaurants (other than the pool) - never do - so I can't comment on that. The hotel is very well-kept. Three members of our group said the fitness center is excellent.

All of that said, we probably would have stayed at the next-door Sonesta St. George, which at least at lobby level is even nicer looking, however, there was a great deal of construction going on (adding floors)in August '08 when we were there and we thought it would be unpleasant at the pool.

We do like the fact (this is true for us in all cities) that both are in the heart of town. We had two rooms - one faced the city, the other the Nile. I would choose the Nile, of course, but enjoyed the city view too.

We stayed at the Movenpick in Aswan in early October. We had a suite in a separate building beyond the pharmacy. I would not recommend this as you had to lug your luggage up stairs inside and there was no view because your patio overlooked the lawn. In the main building people had Nile views. Also, picture taking from the top of the main building was very good.

Note: The pharmacy charged $4 for Antinol (for Mummy Tummy)that the tour guide had sold to the group while we were in Cairo for $1.

Don't worry about your luggage - your LadyEgypt rep will make very sure it's brought to your room for you....seriously, we never touched our luggage except IN our hotel rooms -- there were "people" to do that --from the van to the hotel, from the lobby to the room, and back again!

We stayed at the Movenpick in Aswan and had a BEAUTIFUL Nile view from our room. It was a big room (although the decor was a bit dated), and the bathroom was big and clean. Although we didn't go in the pool itself, we walked around the grounds one morning and thought the pool area was beautiful. We ate at the breakfast buffet and had room service for dinner one night, and found the food to be good. We also had a "breakfast box" packed for us one morning when we had an early departure and I was AMAZED at just how much food they included in the take-out package for us.

It was VERY CONVENIENT to have the pharmacy right downstairs from our room (even if they did charge a lot more than necessary, as the person above commented).

Unlike the person above, I actually thought the fact that the hotel was on an island to be a big PLUS. I thought it was cool to ride the ferry over to the hotel. We never waited more than a minute or two for the ferry to transport us across the river, and it's a VERY short trip.

The tower of the hotel is an eye-sore (it looks like an airport tower which seems so out of place on a peaceful little island in a nice town like Aswan!), but I must say that the views from the top of that tower were FANTASTIC!

We stayed at the movenpick at aswan and the steingerberger at luxor.
The Movenpick was my kid's favourite in egypt (mine was Mena House). I agree with everything Kris-Mom has said, and we also had a very nice afternoon at the pool. It's a very good one, with breathtaking views of the Nile and Aswan city. The rooms were perfect and big and the views of the nile were great. You can choose between mountain view or city view rooms. I prefer mountain view rooms with excellent sights of the tombs of the nobles (illuminated by night) and the river.
The fact that it's in an island is not a problem. The Hotel's private boat service works day and night (we arrived around 2:00 Am) and it's very efficient. It never took us more then five minutes waiting.
The steingerberger at Luxor it's a different kind of hotel. More massified and tpuristic (big groups I mean). It's a very good hotel, with big rooms and a nice pool right by the river. Ask for rooms with Nile view. Not only for the view, but because in the other rooms the balconies are oriented to the interior courtyard where all the restaurants are. Each night there's a really nice show there with derviches and dancers. It's very nice to watch if you're seating in one of the restaurants, but it can be disturbing if you're in your room trying to sleep.
I liked the italian restaurant of the hotel very much and the pool restaurant was also very good. The buffet breakfast was ok.
All that said, I agree with Sf7307: Even if Steingerberger nile palace is a very good hotel, Sonesta St. George just next door looks better and more calmed.
Both are located some 400 meters from the main street: Corniche el nIl; and about 1 km far from Luxor temple. Don't miss a walk (or a caleche ride)from the hotel to that street. It is right by yhe nile and it's a very nice walk, specially at nightfall. You can see there Luxor temple illuminated and it's a magnificent sight.
