During our 4 day safari in July I took just short of 500 pictures. I used the max pixel size and it really came in handy when I zoomed in on some of my shots later. For me that was a huge number of pictures but with digital I felt why not. About 150 - 200 ended up "keepers" and 50 or 60 are candidates for enlargement - very respectable numbers for me. I agree that you have to put down the camera sometimes; I took most of the digital pictures while my wife handled the video.

Tom,

Apparently YOU are paying attention. But if you've stopped paying attention, then you'll never see that I noted you WERE paying attention.

I just started taking some of the better photos and make an Apple photobook with captions and intro about the trip. I have finished 9+ books from some of our other trips (Galapagos, Antarctica, Costa Rica). Was very pleased with the results.

Haven't done the last trip to Africa in May-June 2007, but have narrowed the photos down to 500 to choose from.

Have also made DVD type slide shows or just posted on website for friends to view. Have also made 8x10's of African animals for DH's office.

It depends on teh picture size you are using (i.e resolution). Do some testing on your camera, you probably wont take more thatn 2-300 pictures per day (although I've done more that that) based on the the size (resolution) of the pictures you're taking you can get an accurate idea of the number of cards to take. For example a 1GB card will give you about 250 pictures at 4000kb

I probably took 1800 pictures on an 8 day Kenyan safari with my Canon S3. I used a 2 GB memory card which I downloaded onto an Epson P2000 every night. I had a total of 10 GB of memory but after downloading onto the Epson I cleared the card and reused it. Honestly, I was so tired every night that I barely was able to download the card. There was no way I would be able to edit through all the pictures and delete. I'm still editing now and we went on safari in September.

I will say it's nice to be digital. We came across a female lioness and her three cubs and I probably have 250 pictures just of them. The cubs rolled all over her and fought each other and stalked her tail and I got all of it. It was wonderful not to have to worry about memory. I just watched and shot and watched and shot.

We went to the Galapagos about five years ago and I was still using film. I got a couple of great photos but would love to back again and try it with the digital. A whole different type of photography than a safari. The animals are so much closer, in fact, I would have birds land right on my camera lens!

Have a great time and enjoy!

Hope you have found your answer in all of the many replies.

Specifically, you asked about your camera and number of shots per day. I took a SLR and shot 3,000+ pictures, but my friends all have cameras like yours. They shot about 1,500-2,000.

The reason for taking an extra memory stick or two is you get caught up in taking repeat shots of the same scene searching for that "perfect" shot. Also, a flash drive or external hard drive to copy files onto works great if there are facilities to do this where you are staying.

I deleted pictures each night. Use the zoom enlarger on replay so you can get some of the detail and then decide to delete or not. Check out the eye area specifically.

When you arrive in a place that has a photo store, make a cd of your photos to give you more space. Be careful to check just how many pictures are copied as I had about half of one stick not go onto the cd. A good photo store is your best bet.

You are in for a thrill. Don't cheat on the number of pictures you take. It may be a bit of work when you get home, but it is worth it reliving your journey.

Just to annoy Tom, if he will ever check this thread out again here's another twist:

What is the max # of photos you want to look at in one album on Fodors?

My answer: About 175 and I try to keep my albums down to around 150 or less. I'll split them up with photos of just a specific location per album if need be, so people can just look at the destination they are interested in.

20 or 30 only, in one sitting anyway. Web display is often just not good enough for an image to be appreciated properly, even for those of, say, skimmer or BillH's quality.

Yes, very annoyed Lynn ;-). Truth be known, I check for and read updated threads on this forum about every hour during the day. I simply must get a life.

Album web viewing number of photos? Like John, not a great number, 20 or 30 if even the best of images. Then I'll come back some later for more (if those were really good). Our friends here who have albums of 200-700 photos I never get around to seeing more than those 20-30 that I first pick from thumbnails. My monitor is an NEC 2070NX S-IPS type that shows images nicely. So, a well lit, crisp image can be beautiful, has impact.

As for what I do with my photos, a few I print large, mount, frame and hang in the house. But most of my effort goes into making a "this was our vacation safari" DVD. Usually about 30-40 minutes of still photos and video clips from the last safari. Playing time wise it is more than half video clips because friends/family like the real life impact of video with actual sound. The video clips are as short as I can make them and still have meaning. Remember, this is for entertainment and if it is not people won't watch it. (Unless you sit there and make them). Anyway, I'm still working on the DVD from our September safari. Got off to a slow start. Using Proshow Producer (Proshow Gold is just as good) to put it together. So there, guess you're sorry now that you asked

regards - tom
ps - FWIW I will be out-of-town for the next few days so no more thread annoyance. But I will miss it

Africa ws about the most amazing of all the amazing places I have visited. Trust me when I tell you - take as much memory (if you are using memory sticks they take up no room at all) as you can. On any given game drive, you will be snapping photos non-stop except for when you are trying to remember to look with your eyes instead of your camera. Hundreds of pictures is the norm - you just cannot stop.

Have fun.

Hi Lynn

I took some film, not a lot! Since turning digital in Nov 2005, I have become a bit obsessive! Most weeks I take anywhere from 300 to 500 photos, and in a really bad week, I can take upto 1500 to 1800 photos. I keep less than 5%. When I take better photos, than I often delete earlier attempts.

For Dennis,

I do have African Walls, Australian Bird Walls and Flower Walls. After my next trip to Sth Africa, I will have run out of walls so not sure what I will do then!

Lynn, I like to look at less than 100 photos in an album and I really like it when some culling has been done already. Just like with trip reports - if too long and too detailed, then for me, it seems a real chore to read them.

When in South Africa, I probably bring home anywhere from 2000 to 3000 photos, as I do some deletion when over there and I need to bring that down to no more than about 350 photos. I always do a hard copy album each trip.

Kind regards

Kaye

Hi again Lynn

Just worked out my digital photos over the last 2 years - seems it averages out at about 3000 per week - yes I know, hard to believe! I actually seemed to wear out the Panasonic FZ30 and now have the new Panasonic FZ18.

So yes, I do take way more digital than I ever did on film!

Kind regards

Kaye

With the reports, I always feel I can just skim parts I don't want to read and that the details that I may find irrelevant may be crucial for someone else. But I must admit to skipping the critiques of each and every meal. In the future for my own reports I am going to try to display facts in one part and then do the narrative.

For the photos, in the future I will try to alert people to where certain photos are, such as the pics of the accommodations are at the end.

At first I didn't like different albums for different areas, but now I think that's a good idea.
