Patty - I know I'm silly, but I put those pictures up for my family, and they're all out-and-about and I haven't had anyone to talk about it with!

cynstalker,

Thanks for showing those photos...when Africa is too far, an American safari is not so bad as shown in your photos!

Dennis:

I live in Suuthern Vermont on about 100 acres area that has 6 houses on it. I can't see any of my "neighbors", so we get to see a lot of wildlife. Don't get to see the bear too often, though, so it's pretty exciting!

That's incredible!

Rocco, there are several good destinations in the US to exercise your camera -- Yellowstone tops my list.

I haven't been yet to Alaska, but Denali also has an excellent reputation for wildlife (I am thinking about visiting in Summer 2007).

Cyn, where do you live?

Like the porcupine. In swahili "nungunungu" (the lessons ARE paying off)

Spider I think is bui bui... same as the dress. I think.

Great pictures, Cyn! Wow! What happened to the turkey on the left - he has no head!
Thanks for sharing them - that butterfly with the purple flowers woudl be an award winning shot.

Rocco:

The "Backyard Safari" is kind of all that's keeping me going right now - I've been to lazy to get planning my next trip!

Michael:

I live in Southern Vermont, nice rural area.

Pumbavu:

I like the porcupine too - this is only the second year that we've seen any, and they are very docile - I can walk to within 10 feet of him/her (?) before s/he even looks at me.

Lynda -
The turkey on the left is the sole female and I think she's deliberately hiding!

I like both of the butterfly shots a lot; and I'll probably be getting more as the summer progresses - my "butterfly" bush is just coming into bloom, and I get beautiful orange butterflies on a vibrant purple flower. It's fun!

100 acres sounds very nice...but do bears eat dogs???

Then again, it would take some bear to take on my pack of 10 dogs, even if most of them are under 40 pounds.

Rocco:

Well, they are carniverous...

We don't own all 100 acres, just happens to be why we chose our little 3-acre parcel in it's midst.

BahamaBreeze - lol!!!

Oh I love the butterflies!

Yes, this does give "the squirrel in the engine" story a run for the money!

Michael, we did Denali park last year and after being in Africa, it was very disappointing. We saw two bears (some people see none) but they were very far away. At a stop near a lake we did see a moose but the bugs were so bad no one could eat their lunch. It was 12 hours in a bus (the park controls it so that's how you go) for very few sightings. Alaska is gorgeous elsewhere but don't expect too much wildlife from Denali.

Clematis1, that's disappointing about Denali, but I have heard reports from others who have seen a dozen grizzlies, as well as wolves, in a short stay -- its a matter of luck.

If I go to Alaska, I will pair Denali with another location (and I'm currently deciding between Kodiak, Brooks Camp and Glacier Bay National Park). I appreciate the difficulty in securing accomodations at Brooks Lodge, so if that's what I decide, I may need to delay my visit until July 2008 (reservations for which can be made in January 2007). I did call about availability for Brooks Lodge next Summer, and they had one spot available for one night in July, but plenty of openings in September.

Cyn, looks like a wide variety of wildlife in Vermont -- I am embarrassed to admit that even though I live in NYC and have been to 43 states, I have not been to Vermont (yet).

Michael, were those people staying in the park? That would up your chances, yes.

Still... it isn't Africa (for us). But then that's been my problem on every trip since Africa.

Speaking of Grizzlies, has anybody else yet had the opportunity to enjoy the documentary film "Grizzly Man"?

Thit Cho, would you ever repeat your Polar Bear expedition or was that pretty much a one time thing?

I would be interested in Yellowstone, Denali and going up to Canada for Polar Bears...a sledded dog adventure sounds like a lot of fun, as well.
