Does anyone know how much deet is enough. I believe in Canada we can only buy up to 30% and reports show that no more is necessary. Anyone have any more input as I dont want to stock up and then have it not protect me well enough once I get to Southern Africa. (Sorry I have no answer to the above question as I am in the same position right now.) Thanks.

laughternlife, I read somewhere in the threads that 30% or more is the way to go.
In Oz we can only get 20% unless we buy Bushmans 80% gel.

I work in a travel clinic; we recommend 20-35% DEET. Higher percentages don't give better protection...only a bit longer. But you can get the longer protection (at the lower DEET concentration) if you use a "controlled release" formula.

You don't need any more than 30% Deet*. I was once given a small packet of repellent, as used by golfers, that was 80%. I handed it back so quickly and suggested that no one use this amount of poison, on their person.

You only need repellent during mossie biting time - dusk to dawn - on exposed skin. With long pants, sleeves and socks, doesn't leave must skin. Believe me one 8oz bottle will last your trip and then some. Whether Peaceful Sleep for spraying rooms or other brand, I leave it up to the camp/lodge what they spray when I'm out for dinner. Just as long as I don't smell it when I return and nothing has drifted down on my bedding (pillows/top sheet).

*Kind of like do you need #30SPF or #50SPF. The only benefit of 50SPF is that you don't have to reapply as often.

Ultrathon and Sawyers both have controlled release formulas that give extended protection without having to have an excessively high percentage of DEET.

I personally prefer the texture of the Sawyers, but many people like the Ultrathon.
