Dana,

It was your Namibia trip, that i was reffering to in the above post!

One strategy, i try to use .... when i want to "escape" i.e.,chat with the guides and camp managers ...... they always have something interesting to talk about!

Hari,
Sorry, I thought it was somebody else's trip you were referring to.

Agreed . . . about talking with the guides and camp managers. I travel by myself, so this comes natural to me, plus it just adds so much more to the trip. I love getting to know new people, and the more time I can spend with locals the better.

I was the only guest at Kichwa Tembo Bateleur's Camp several years ago. Can you imagine that? The only guest in the camp? I spent most of the time talking with the manager, Milka, and my guide, David. Oh, and there was George, the chef. This was one of my favorite life experiences of all time. I learned about there lives, especially the life of a woman growing up in a Massai tribe. It was incredible.

Being alone in a camp (only days after the threat on the American Embassy in Kenya) is preferable to being stuck with horrible traveling companions, hence my comment about the mobile safari.

I'm enjoying your trip report, Rick, and look forward to your pictures. I did Migration Routes in June 2006 and enjoyed it immensely.

I had never camped before and like my privacy and creature comforts, but I found it to be a wonderful adventure and adapted with no problem. In fact, I'd love to do another similar safari.

Too bad the price has increased and there is now a single supplement, but it's still a good value.

Thanks for the continued comments...

It was a great trip and photos are coming -- probably way too many of them as, being my first safari, "every rock and bush was of interest" as someone else in this forum has said, not to mention every impala...

Hi Rick,

Enjoyed your report, had a (wry) laugh over your pain-in-the-butt story. That is, of course, one of my fears about travelling alone and getting stuck with strangers.

Anyway, what's your take on the whole US/travel advisory thing in Kenya?
