Huh. It looks like I am the only sensible Fodorite after all. Fancy that.
You know how we loooove to talk about money here. How much are you thinking of spending on this trip not including airfare? Let's then break down days on safari and "hanging out" near Laikipia. How high can you go on safari days/nights? And how low will you need to go the other nights? Then we can see whether or not you can afford to go to Frankfurt to pick up Kimburu's camera.
And, off topic, how old are these kids you're teaching? I taught buckets of undergrads while in graduate school. "Nice Leely" turned into someone no one messed with pretty quickly. Leely = steely. Nyamera can do the same.

Hello Nyanera,
I vote for the Canon S3 which I recently purchased for myself. I also agree with Kimburu to look at purchasing the S2. They are virtually the same camera. Only differences are the colour and the size of the LCD monitor (I think?). Check into buying used as well which can save you $200. The best thing about this camera is you only need to purchase two more things for it: a camera bag and a a rechargeable battery kit for double AA if you don't alrady have one as it uses 4 AA's. Oops, and a memory card of course - secure digital with high speed writing to fully take advantage of what the camera offers.

Nyamera - I would echo Leely's advice to skip the new camera and use the money toward the trip. Unfortuantely that's all I can muster in the advice arena. I probably have less sense than even self-confessed low-water-mark cooncat!
Best wishes for success though!

Kimburu, someone could pick up the camera for me in Bangkok. My parents are going to Thailand for my mothers 60th birthday and they will be in Bangkok 22-24 March. The problem is I need a camera ASAP.
, congratulations on your new venture! You really should pretend to be sensible and that the sensible thing to do is to spend a lot of money.
I’d need at least 600 millilitres of regular conditioner for my trip and that means four 200 ml bottles. How much Aveda Elixir would I need?
Lynn, I’ve actually lost my meal several times. Thanks for the teaching advice!!!
Leely, I really shouldn’t spend anything at all, but I’m thinking max. $2500.
The kids are 13-15 years old.
Juliet, it looks like I’ll have to get myself an S2!
and Favor, asante sana. I think you might be sensible Fodorites, but I’m not that sure…
I hope I survive school tomorrow. My chances would be better if I’d spent this time preparing myself – it takes me hours to write a few lines – but then, I’ve got some excellent advice here!

Well the camera will be here for you Nyamera if you don't get anything first - I'm not really actively trying to sell it and if I can't I'll take it to Namibia and be one of those people who has a "back-up" point and shoot for "emergencies and the unexpected" and look very professional and prepared (provided of course that I can pick up a decent hat at last in Windhoek).

Does anyone know if there’re Stockholm-Nairobi return flights for less than $986? I’d like to buy the ticket and start contacting camps.
I can find no serious looking S2 on the Swedish Ebay and Tradera. There’s a S3, but the seller wants as much as the cheapest new S3s costs. If there weren’t so many sensible Fodorites I’d already have got a camera, but I’d also have spent a lot of money…
Next weeks there’s a “health week” at the school. It’s <b>very</b> unplanned, but I know that I’m supposed to participate in the snuff information http://www.swedish-snus.com/
I’ve also been asked to find some articles in English. As I’ve understood it, this health week is mostly about the dangers of sugar and the like … For some perspective, maybe I could use articles about AIDS and malaria, though it would be useful to be able to threaten the kids with throwing sugar cubes at them. Does any Fodorites know about good articles that aren’t too difficult? Maybe something like this: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/4816558.stm
Or maybe I’m supposed to find something about “Obesity in America”. Or, about some kid that shot 20 schoolmates because he was high on sugar.
Here’s a hat for Kimburu:

Sometimes the route to Africa is not direct. If a detour through the dangers of snuff is necessary, then let's go there.
Assuming you choose chewing tobacco, you could place little cups of mashed up watered down snuff at their desks to simulate the what gets spit out. Approach it from the angle of who wants to kiss a mouth that’s been full of this?
These words in a Google image search produced a gross mouth from chewing tobacco:
Chewing tobacco unhealthy
These 2 sites had info and gross mouth pictures from disease associated with snuff:
http://www.quittobacco.com/facts/effects.htm
http://www.dentalgentlecare.com/smokeless_tobacco.htm
This site mentions sexual side effects of chewing tobacco
http://www.thirdage.com/healthgate/files/14581.html
I'd pick a topic that can be accompanied by disgusting photos and other gross props.
Don't give them any ideas about a sugar high as a defense.

Now I’ve booked the ticket!!! I almost had a nervous breakdown when I discovered you could no longer pay with Visa card and the transfer had to be made within 24 hours. I can’t make online bank transfers, but thankfully I got some assistance from my father. I’ll be in Nairobi 19:10 on Wednesday 20 June. If I lose my job I don’t know what I’ll do.
I’ll start contacting Mara camps asking about stays for 6 nights or more starting 22 June, or should I leave Nairobi the morning after arriving as I usually do?
Lynn, thanks for the ideas. This health week thing has me really worried, as I haven’t even got the time to prepare – and learn – my regular job. The snuff is of a variety that you put under your lip, but it’s just as disgusting as chewing tobacco. The problem is that they already see the gross stuff that’s spit out, every day, all over school. And, if I ask them who wants to kiss a mouth that’s been full of this, they’ll just give me names. Gross mouth pictures are always useful. Are teenage tobacco chewers a problem in the USA? I need some international articles, I think.

Well done. Don'tlose your job and thanks for the hat tip - it must be good because it made my wife roll her eyes all the way around.
Sugar is spots and flabby waists but that might be a bit close to the bone for adolescents. I have nothing to say about snuff.
The results of the Supersize Me experiement might be interesting reading for sugar.

Chewing tobacco and snuff are not as prevalent as cigarette smoking, pot, alcohol, etc.
You could do a relaxation-meditation exercise. Have soft music and students lay down and you tell them to relax the various parts of their body, concentrating on breathing. Relaxation is good for health and you can draw out this demo as long as needed or cut it short if time runs out. I'm sure you can find some stats on relaxation or meditation and health. Meditation might be too controversial a topic, but relaxation should ruffle no feathers.
Good luck and when does your school year end?

Hi Nyamera
Congrats on the upcoming trip. Looks like we'll be in Nairobi at the same time, you on your way to Mara, me just returning. Looks like there's no Lamu in your plans so I guess I still have to check out Petley's for you
Good luck on Health Week. The snuff disease has crawled over the border and arrived here in Norway as well.
