Phones in Israel

Hi, Ill be in Israel for about 6 weeks this summer and I was wondering if anyone knows the best way to get a cellphone there (to call home in Canada and to call people in Israel cheaply!). Or, is there a better (and more economically-efficient) way to make calls (ie calling cards, etc...). Thanks!

Whenever traveling to Israel we rent a cell phone from Travelcell.com which has good rates, both within Israel and to the USA and Canada.

BTW, incoming phone calls in Israel are free when using cell phones.

If you have a Verizon cell phone service in the US, you can now use your phone in Israel. The cost per minute is about 69 cents. Check with Verizon. It sure beats getting a new # and having to rent a new phone.

I am not so sure, geriatric. After checking the rates from TravelCell, I sure don't see it financially logical to take my Verizon phone with me...

Unless, of course, you're in a business in which you must answer EVERY SINGLE phone call, not miss anything, as if you're still at home...

I used Amigo on a recent trip, and the price was reasonable. 39 cents a minute to the US, and 29 cents a minute for local calls, with all incoming calls free.

Last time I was in Israel, I purchased a $10 phone card and was able to call are a bit higher during the day but due to the time change, I just called home in the evening there, daytime here.

I don't think you're talking about using a CELL PHONE, edie...

I just got my cell phone from TravelCell for my brother who's leaving in a couple days for Israel. I rented it for a month. The rate for local call within Israel is:

13 cents per minute to a local land line, or to a "Cellcom" cell phone

31 cents to any other cell phone

31 cents to the USA or Canada

Rental is $8 and insurance is $7 total.

Shipping is $15 each way.

I think this is a good deal.
