Anyone know a cheapo airline that goes from LIS to ROM

Looking for a discount intra Europe airline that flys from Lisbon to Rome. Any ideas? Tried a bunch of sites can't come up with any reasonable ones. Thanks in advance.

Have you tried whichbudget.com? You can put in your start and end cities and see what they come up with.

Vueling flies this route but you have to change planes in Barcelona. Lison/Barcelona cost is around 60E and Barcelona/Rome is about 60E.

You might try europebyair.com and see if they have a flight.

Thanks for the advice. Whichbudget only showed Paris or Amsterdam from Lisbon, nothing for Italy. If I keep checking on Whichbudget, do they ever display other cities for a Lisbon departure? I will check out Vueling, sounds cheap enough. Thanks.

Paula - I don't know what you're seeing. But when I go to whichbudget.com, and click I want to go from Portugal and then click Lisbon (LIS), I get a long list of cities in Europe.

However, most are on AirBerlin, which requires a connection at Palma de Mallorca in the Mediterranean, and then onto other cities in Germany. So, just ignore AirBerlin and look for the other carriers.

Vueling to Barcelona is listed there. Problem is that their daily LIS-BCN flight arrives almost midnight, so you'll need a night of hotel there. And their BCN-FCO flight doesn't leave until mid-day, and arrive Rome at 2pm. So, you basically wasted a whole day and night.

whichbudget.com is a great resource for finding the low cost carriers that serve any particular route.

The reason you only see Amsterdam and Paris from Lisbon is because that's the only non-stops serviced by any LCCs. If you don't see your origin/destination is because there is no LCC non-stop service provided on that route. But don't despair. Here is where you have to get creative. You already know that you can fly to AMS or Paris from LIS. Next look at Rome and see which airline flies from there to either Paris or Amsterdam. I'm sure you can find something reasonable, just give yourself good connection time as the LCCs do not check you all the way through. All of them are just point to point airlines.

If that's something you don't want to deal with then majors are your only other option. check www.opodo.com (European version of Orbitz), also check all the other normal channels.

Again, if you don't see a direct LIS-ROM flight on whichbudget.com is because there are non offered by the budget airlines.

Good luck

Same problem with Germanwings via Stuttgart. Even later flight from STR to FCO.

If you're going on Oct30 or later, you can try easyjet via Geneva. Same overnight deal, but they have really low prices like €12.99 for LIS-GVA, and 15.95 CHF for GVA-CIA (Rome Ciampino). They also have an early flight to Rome, 6:45-8:10am.

There are other possibilites. You need to do the homework.

OMG you people are a wealth of information. You're right I was only checking the direct flights. I hadn't thought of doing other connecting cities. I will check out ALL of your suggestions. For the major airlines quoting MAJOR bucks (even Iberia) for the same flight destinations, I will definately spend time researching this. THANKS TO ALL!

I know I'm repeating myself but I just want you to make sure your connecting time is sufficient.

The LCCs are point to point airlines. That means that after the first segment you will have to collect your luggage, (if necessary, go through immigration/customs), walk over to the departure area and re-check again for your second flight. And this is also true even if it's the same LCC airline for both segments.

These budget airlines have check-in cutoff times and they DO enforce it. Even a minute late will get you "Sorry". If you miss the connecting flight, it means you need to purchase a new ticket.

So, please consider the connecting time when doing your search.

Good luck!

One more suggestion.

It looks to me that you are only looking for one-way LIS-ROM.

Did you check one-way fares with the major airlines? If so, you need to go back and do a R/T fare check. Pick a return date at least a week after your outbound flight. You may be in for a surprise. A R/T will be a lot less then a one-way. You just toss the return ticket after completing your first flight. And don't worry, nobody will be coming after you to collect any $ fare difference just because you didn't use the return. Just don't make it a habit of it and especially with the same airline.

Thanks so much for the help.

How much time do you think I should allow for picking up the luggage and rechecking in for the next flight? I know you can't give me an exact time but as a general rule how much would you allow without it being too close?

I've been on the compuetr all afternoon. Lots of possibilities, but I never tried the major airlines, guess all the threats about not using the RT ticket scared me off. Thanks

You didn't post any specific dates. I found ~$150 fares on Iberia, when you purchase a R/T. This may be your best option. As I said, don't worry about tossing the return ticket. Nothing will happen. This flight does connect through MAD/BCN, (don't remember), but you are protected, as it will be on one ticket.

If you are still interested in the LCCs, then my suggestion is ~3 hours connection time in Amsterdam and ~4 hours in Paris. Just remember, you can't combine/interline the 2 tickets together. If something goes terribly wrong with your first flight, and you miss the second one, you are on your own. You will have to purchase the second ticket again, at whatever the going fare is at that time.

Thanks AA...quick question... Would it be fair to say that if my RT ticket from MIA to LIS and out of ROM for return to MIA is on Iberia, and I try the discarding half of the $150 ish RT ticket from LIS to ROM?(provided it is Iberia too. They seem to have the cheapest rates) that I may get caught?

I imagine the Iberia computers may prompt a question or two when I go to return home. What do you think? Last 2 questions...promise. (ps- I am doing research now for next June's trip...found $863, although it was $843 2 days ago, from MIA to LIS, then ROM to MIA, dep 6-3, ret 6-22, is this a good, bad or ok deal? Paris was $822)

It probably won't be a problem but it's a possibility.
Here are couple of suggestions.
On the US-EUR ticket use the name as it appears in your passport.
On the intra-EUR ticket, either add/subtract the middle initial.
Also, if you are collecting miles, give the airline your FF number for the US-EUR trip. Do not give the same number for the intra-EUR flights. You can still collect miles by submitting "missing miles" report for the one way trip after you return home. Just save the boarding pass.

The fare? I think it's a good deal. LIS is not known for outstanding fare deals. I would grab it if I were you.

One more suggestion.

Did you try to price it as a multi-city ticket with Iberia?

6/3 MIA-LIS
6/? LIS-FCO
6/22 FCO-MIA

try it and see what it comes back with.

Thanks AA.....I priced the itinerary as follows on Iberia

MIA-LIS out 6-1
LIS-ROM out 6-12
ROM-MIA out 6-21

It came up with $1205

Granted for $1063 ($863 Iberia and if I could get the $150 Iberia ticket as you saw ) or if I did Ryan air tickets LIS-BCN. (BCN-ROM which came to $161 and would total $1024 for the while trip) it would be cheaper but do you think it's worth the hassle to save the extra $275 (this is probably a dumb question.)

Thank you so much for all of your advice. I will probably just go ahead and do one or the other today. I am so concerned about the gas prices and what may happen by next year.

You welcome.

Your math needs a little correction.

With the Iberia R/T it would be $1013, not $1063.

So the real difference is ~$190, not $275.

Is it worth it? only you can make the call.

If you feel comfortable with that fare then go ahead and pull the "trigger".

Good luck!

Ok...so I am arithmetically challenged....I meant to say savings of $181 to $192.....

also forgot to mention that the Ryan Air flights are just estimates as they do not have any way to price for next June yet. I used Sept 12 -2005 for the travel date to get an idea.
