Passport suffix
Hello, My family is headed to Costa Rica in July. Today we went to renew my children's passports. My oldest son is a II. His name is the same as his fathers, but not a junior. Anywho, his current passport has only his first, middle, and last name. No II at the end. This is how I booked our airline tickets. Today at the post office the agent told me to add the II on my form as it is on his birth certificate. I am concerned that this go around it will be on his passport and he will be denied boarding or will just cause problems in general. Thoughts?? This will be his third passport renewal and II IS NOT of his first two.

We had the same issue when my husband renewed his Canadian passport. I had already booked an international flight using his first initial and full second and surnames, X. Xxxx Xxxxx which has always been on his passports and on his drivers licence. He was told at the passport office to spell out his full name or it could cause problems entering some countries. He didn’t do this, and so far, no problems.
I also use a different name on my passport than on my birth certificate as I no longer use my given first name, second and surname only. I have been asked at a land crossing into the US and also when applying for an Australian ETA if I have ever used a different name and when I say yes and give it, no problem.
My recommendation is to first ask the airline if they can alter the name on the booking to match a renewed passport. I wouldn’t want to leave it to the whims of the airport agent to make the call at the last minute.
