Ankgor Tour guide

Hi,
can anyone recommend a good English speaking tour guide for Ankgor Wat?

As always, thank you.

Ponheary Ly gets lots of kudos here. Just so a search and you'll find her contact information. Her brother Dara, is also a guide and gets good recommendations as well.

Ponheary can be reached at [email protected]. Both she and her brother are very good. She also helped us get a hotel at very reasonable rates. Many on this forum have used P or Dara and been very pleased. In 2005, it was $45 per day for her and a driver. Gas prices may have driven this up.

Ponheary is excellent but she and her brother Dara get booked up so e-mail her today. If you are interested in visiting a Cambodian school and donating supplies, she can arrange that - she is a former school teacher and is passionate about education. She has lots of stories to tell about her and her family's experiences with the Khmer Rouge - some appreciate this, some don't - it is part of the experience of visiting Cambodia though and it was worthwhile for us.

John Teng was excellent - we really enjoyed our time with him. Went out of his way to arrange things, not only at the temples, but for evening shows and outbound transportation. Speaks english well - he's polite and punctual without fail.

He was particularly good in directing our time so as to miss the usual crowded spots at crowded times, as we had requested.

He has a website now at:
http://www.angkorservice.com/

He also helps out with assisting local groups and schools, if you wish. Has more about it on his page, under education.

My wife and I will be in Siem Reap next week. Unfortunately, we only have a day and a half to see the temples. Thanks to the many Ponheary recommendations on this site, we emailed her to see if she was available. Fortunately she was available and promised to show us as many of the best temples that we can see in our limited amount of time. We are very excited and surprised that she was not booked. Her rate is still $45 per day. We are also staying in her family guesthouse for $20. Thanks to all on this board for the recommendations.

If you employ a tour guide (such as Ponheary), do you tip them on top of their quoted daily fee?

Definitely. Our tour guide had 3 beautiful young children and our driver had recently gotten married. They provided sensational service. Our money goes so much farther in Cambodia's local economy than anywhere else we know. So many reasons to be as generous as possible.
