Burma - What makes it special to you?
In looking at various Asian trips and considering Burma, what were your highlights and how would you compare to other Asian destinations you have visited.
Thank you.
Thank you.

Burma was special to me because of the people. Pure and simple. Yes Bagan has wonderful old temples and the Shwedagon is spectacular but none of that is what made it a fabulous trip for me. it was all about connecting with and learning from and, hopefully, helping the people we came in contact with. So if you go, do NOT take one of the cruises where your contact with people will be limited.
In terms of highlights --
spending the day in a village near Heho where tourists don't go when they are treking. Last Westerner they had seen was three years earlier.
Having tea with a family who live in one of the houses in the middle of Inle lake
Hanging out in tea shops with our guide
Talking for hours at a time with the Assistant manager of our hotel in Moguk -- we were the only people in the hotel the 3 nights we were there-- and visiting his family
Taking 22 rolls of film of people we met who asked us to send the photos to relatives who lived outside of Burma
taking letters out to be mailed in Thailand for people
Calling relatives of people we met in Burma to pass along messages etc.
Learning about Burma from our wonderful guide.
Our 3 weeks in Burma were among the best in my life.

hi there,
agree totaly with glorialf. The people make the difference. Ok, but as more and more travellers and even groups come to that country it is in a fast change.
Beside this there are a few things that are very unique:
Bagan, a never ending landscape full of tempels and pagodes - and, if You a willing to let yourselfe in, full of mystic.
Lake Inle, beautiful lake, origin markets, aside from the floating market which is just a tourist trap.
The golden rock, breathtaking place.
Shwedagon Pagode, pure gold and pure religion.
have fun
