China GTGs in November

We (DH and I) will be in several locations in China in November, and will like to get together for dinner with Fodorites traveling there at that time. The following are our available dates and location:

11/3 and 11/4 Xian

11/5 and 11/6 Kunming

11/7, 8 and 9 Lijiang

11/12, 13 and 14 Shanghai

We know of one Fodorite who will be staying at the same inn as we are in Lijiang in 11/8 and 9, and we plan to gtg.

Wish we could join you! We will be in China but not the same locations those dates.

Always fun to GTG in far off places.

Hope you post a report of how it went!

Barb -- This is my 7th trip in the past 10 years, China is fabulous, have a fantastic time!

Had to juggle the dates with other evenings already booked with family, relatives, classmates and friends.

Shanghainese Thanks! This is our first trip to Mainland China. have been to Hong Kong and Taiwan. so looking forward to this trip.

Doing all the typical tourist places this time. Sorry not Shanghai however - next time! This time Nanning (husband's meeting), Guilin, Yangshuo, Xi'an, Beijing. Enough for only 2 weeks I think.

Reading all the great reports here and getting excited!

Barb -- I am looking forward to your TR, especially about Nanning where I've never been to.

Did someone respond to your Mid-Nov weather in Beijing question? It gets cool and a warm jacket is advisable, if you don't want to pack it, you can always buy one there, I bought a padded one last year for 120 yuan. My friend came back last weekend with six 100%-cotton stylish long sleeve blouses for 15 yuan a piece, only flaw is the fabric is thin like the H&M products.

Too bad. We arrive in Shanghai on November 15 so we will just miss you. We'll be staying in the Meridian there. I have used a lot of the info you have posted here to help plan my trip so thank you. And have a great time.

Shanghanese,
Since you offered, here are a few more questions on Shanghai:

1)Do you have one favorite restaurant we should not miss? Or maybe one very nice restaurant and one great hole in the wall?

2) Is it worth it to have a shirt or suit made in Shanghai? If so where? And how long will it take? How much?
Note we will be in Shanghai for 4 days and Hong Kong for 4 1/2.

3) What's your favorite area in Shanghai to just walk and wander?

4) Which water town to go to for a relaxing day trip? Again mostly to just wander.

Thanks!

Paulo59,
Shanghainese is the expert, but for what it's worth, here are my suggestions;
For a nice restaurant try:
South Beauty 28 Taojiang Lu 021/6445-2581
We enjoyed walking around the French concession, Yu Yuan and of course the Bund.
My favorite water town was Suzhou (may want to stay overnight).
I think you'll love the Royal Meridian - we did.
Don't miss the Shanghai museum!
Hi Shanghainese.

PS
for a more "local" (though not Shainghainese cuisine) we liked:
Guyi Hunan, 89 Fumin Lu
I wish I was going back!

I'm leaving Hong Kong for Beijing in the next few days and will be there until the end of November. I'm on a fairly tight schedule with not much time for socializing but I'd be happy to help out anyone who gets stuck.

Paolo I am in Suzhou at the moment staying for 2 nights. I love Chinese gardens so this is perfect.
It is also a very nice city.

Am going to visit one of the water towns tomoworrow am not sure which one either Tongli or Zhouzhuang. Will post after my visit.

Great. I've heard Xitang is great but have not heard about Tongli or Zhouzhuang. Looking forward to your report.
