it really depends on what you are doing and where you are going.... can you be a bit more specific...
for instance we had an SUV and spent about 11 days with the driver and drove within delhi, from delhi to agra and jaipur and back to delhi....that was in the $400-500 ballpark which included some regional tolls....

this site gives it to you. Of course, if you get a specialty driver the rates will be different - but you can work out your base rates on this site to give you an idea when negotiating with your guy.

Someone posted somewhere that shopping is 25% cheaper in Delhi for same goods sold in shimla..thoughts? what kinds of things would I need a driver for in shimla? Just going back and forth to mall road?

I've used Narender for road trips in 2007 and 2008, as well as having him take us all day around Delhi three different times. He took very good care of us, is quite interesting, speaks well, and drives very cautiously. I can't say anything bad about him.
In Shimla, a taxi will be just fine. You'll need it to get to the mall, and a few other sites in town. If you take the hotel car to the Mall, there are lots of taxis at the elevator that will negotiate a flat rate for a few hours. Key word here: negotiate, and before you get in the car. Like anything else, offer about half of what they say will be the price.... Oberoi will offer you a hotel car by teh hour. It is outrageously expensive. If you ask them to call a taxi for you, the hotel car will get cheaper!

Oh...drive to shimla??? Would consider it...only 6-7 hours? The flight is terribly expensive .just want to maximize my time in places so I thought 1 hour flight better. Toy train sounded way too long! ICUY what do you think of driving versus flying to shimla?

the quotes below are from the Wildflower/ Oberoi site. They seem to think it will be an eight hour drive Delhi-Shimla and another 45 minutes to Wildflower hall.
If you really don't want to fly, I'd do the train to Chandigarh and then do the 4 hours up the mountain. Again, I really don't like doing the mountain roads unless I trust the driver. I also don't like having one driver go eight hours in a day, as I worry they'll get tired. in this case, they last part of the journey is where they need their wits about them!
<i>By air
Daily direct flights to Shimla from Delhi are available. Private air charters can also be organized. The flying time is 45 minutes. The Shimla airport is 90 minutes from the hotel. Limousine pick up can be arranged from Shimla or Chandigarh airport.
By road
The hotel is located 13 Kms from Shimla, next to the village of Charabra, on the Shimla-Kufri road. Shimla is connected by road from Chandigarh (124 Kms), from Kalka (110 Kms) and from Delhi (385 Kms). The drive from Delhi to Shimla takes approximately 8 hours and from Chandigarh to Shimla, approximately 3 hours. The drive from Shimla to Wildflower Hall takes approximately 45 minutes.
By rail
Fast trains run daily from Delhi to Chandigarh and Kalka. From Kalka, train connections on a quaint narrow gauge railway, built in 1903, are available upto Shimla. The travel time is approximately 4 hours. There are number of trains to Chandigarh and Kalka. Limousine pick up can be arranged from Shimla or Chandigarh railway stations.
