Differences with Thailand and Vietnam?

4 of us are thinking about going to Vietnam next March. We have all been to Thailand and traveled to Bangkok, Chaing Mai and Phuket. We loved the country and had a wonderful time. We are now thinking of going to Vietnam but wonder if going there would be too similar to Thailand as far as scenery, shopping and markets, cultural experiences etc. I know it's a completely different country but I would imagine there are some significant similarities as well. Can anyone offer some advice, information, or suggestions. All 4 of us would love to go to Vietnam but also want a different cultural experience than Thailand.

Hmmm... interesting post.

I have been to Thailand twice this year and also to Vietnam this year. Although both countries are in SE Asia, they are completely different in terms of cultural experiences and scenery.

I only spent time in northern Vietnam but I look forward to exploring more of this wonderful country at another time.

Cheers!

I agree that the two countries are quite different. I've traveled extensively in SE Asia and find that each of the countries has its own unique flavor. I think you'll find VN different enought from Thailand to feel you've had a new experience.

Dear lilypoo, surely Vietnam is very different than Thailand. We have different cultures, different lifestyle, different beauty spots...Even in Vietnam, the North also differs the South and the Central. The North is the most traditional region, so you can view a lot of interesting traditional customs here. The South is hustle and bustle, it used to be regarded as the 'Far East Pearl'. The central is quiet and peaceful. Just come and feel it yourself. I hope you will have a great time there!
