I still have Chengdu on my itinerary and as of now, not changing it. I didn't realize there was another quake.
If I had to change my plans (3 nights), I'm not sure what to add for my itinerary. Any suggestions?

The recent 5.0 quake is in County Ying in Yunan province, epicentre was shallow causing damage to schools, dwellings, telecom towers, roads and bridges, some say it's an aftershock of the previous one near Chengdu, Sichuan, others say it's a different fault.

With regard to speculation over earthquakes and Chengdu - I live in Chengdu – there was zero damage from that last shock, which indeed affected Yunnan as much as Sichuan. In fact within the city there was no major damage from the big shock in May.
In those areas that did suffer, some tourist sites have again opened - like the fantastic Qingcheng front mountain - which is just over an hours drive from Chengdu. In many areas the locals are desperate for tourists to come back, to counteract the economic-shock that followed the big quake.
Life in Chengdu goes on very much as normal – and is not affected by any panic over the possibility of a new big shock.
By the way I was guiding guests around Sichuan – using Chengdu as our central base - as soon as 3 weeks after the May shock – which kind of puts into perspective how the shock can affect a visit to Sichuan. After all the major shock damage was localized and Sichuan covers a huge area!!!!!!!

I arrive late the 15th myself. Have a plan to keep myself busy and some more work has been thrown at me there. Dedcided to hit the Draginfly spa when I get in by the Kempinski. I can only afford massages and pedicures in Asia these days I also figure the kempinski has a german bar (paulaner) and i will go for a drink after. they have some octber fest thing going on and so long as I can sit and chill and read with my beer I will give it a go. Will be tired after Japan. So thrilled to be taking the bulet train though.

Wow! What a great thread.
I will be in Beijing October 12 -18 and then Shanghai October 18 - 24. I would like to do some side trips but I haven't gotten that far. I am putting this trip together at the last minute.
Monica - I will email you via your comcast address.
Lolly - We can meet in Shanghai. We will overlap only one night.
Shiohban - I contacted you via the other post.
Wbo else will be around during those dates?
AND is it crazy just to go to two main cities? I have been in Hong Kong. It's great.
I am open to all recommendations. I will be traveling on my own. For now I need to know the preferred hotel areas.
Many thanks.
Lisa

Hi Lisa,
How many days do you have for your trip?
I'll talk to you later when you email me. I am planning to meet up with Syl and her group one night. No set date yet. We're at the same hotel, so we're planning to leave a note to get in contact. Where are you staying?
