I knew I'd be up before 6 this morning. It was actually about 4:30. I'm now packed for SIN and I'm taking only the necessary things, leaving the rest here in storage at AS, since I'm coming back here Thursday for another 4 nights.

AskOksena, (Robert) I'm really anxious to fly your favorite airline today. I guess I'll find out which terminal and which lounge and which plane (old or new) once I get to the airport and settle in. It will be a nice experience, I'm sure. I will give details later.

Mary, yes, Angelee was leading two ladies carrying lots of shopping bags! We were frazzled. Angelee was smiling... what a cutie! There was this gold party dress and sparkly shoes that she managed to get a sales clerk (at the big Emporium store... that's where we did all of the shopping) to put on her. She paraded around in them for quite a while, thinking her "Auntie Carol" would succomb. Ha! Her mother and I finally convinced her to take her "Uncle Brad" shopping when he comes next month. She can show HIM the dress and shoes, oh, and the pink Barbie tricycle, and what else was she hoping to get yesterday???

When Thais take their children into restaurants, most of the time the children can wander around the restaurant and the staff will sort of look after them so the parents can dine in peace. I'm sure you've all seen this sort of thing. Well, let me tell you, Angelee is little miss social butterfly. She'll visit every table and talk with the diners. She speaks Thai, English and some Danish (at age 3), so she can communicate with pretty much anyone. What an independent and confident (and bright) little lady! She has a promising future.

Looks like we might get some rain this morning?? Last night's downpour cooled things off a bit. SIN is supposed to be sunny and today. Sounds lovely!

Time for a shower and breakfast, and then off to the airport about 7:30.

Later....

Brad, I've actually been to Waterville, Maine - many times in a previous life for business. I don't need to return.

Carol, hope you had a great flight - I'm in the IC lounge right now...

I'm here, IC, Singapore. Nice room. I just might make my way down to the lounge. Maybe I'll see you there, Craig.

Just spent a nice hour or so talking with Craig and Jeane in the club lounge here at the IC in Singapore. What a nice lounge. The decor feels colonial. It's really lovely. Craig and Jeane are having a nice vacation. I can tell by their happy smiles. They were telling me about the places they have been while here in Singapore, plus a big about their first stop, Malaysia. I'll let Craig entertain you with his trip report and will not divulge details/impressions here.

I had a Singpore Sling... I know, I'm not at Raffles. It's probably not the 'real thing'.... haha! But I enjoyed it! I also had some chicken satay with sauce and a couple of other food items in the lounge. Enough to keep my going for tonight.

Today I started my morning with breakfast at the AS on soi 8 in Bangkok. Then off to the airport for my flight at 9:40am on Singapore Airlines, biz class. Not a free ticket for this part of the journey.

Singapore Airlines gave me a fast track pass, so I zipped through immigration and security. A quick look in a couple of the multitude of shops at the BKK airport, and then I was on my way to the Silver Kris Lounge that is fairly close to gate D2 (my departure gate). The lounge was quite nice (but I think the Thai lounges are maybe a bit nicer at BKK airport). I had some finger sandwiches and coffee and fresh fruit.

Upon arrival at my gate, I was invited to board immediately. Boarding had already begun, even though the scheduled boarding time had not yet arrived, according to my watch. I was greeted at the door of the plane and shown to my seat by a very friendly FA. She then helped stow my bag in the overhead bin. I was offered magazines and beverage, etc.

The FA was kind enough to spend time talking to me about Singapore when I told her my reading material would be my TOP 10 SINGAPORE guide that I just gotten the day before. She recommended China Town and Sentosa Island. I told her I had thought about Sentosa but didn't know if I'd have time to go there. Anyway, very nice FAs in biz class!

My in-flight meal was really great. I had what they called 'pancakes' and I pictured pancakes!! What I got was two rolled ..what I would call... crepes filled with a variety of seafood and creamy sauce. Yummy! I also had some fresh fruit, coffee, and a banana cream custard sort of dessert. It was all very tasty. I'm not a foodie, and I have food allergies, so I'm usually not adventurous. This meal might not have sounded quite like something I'd want to eat, if I had read the description of it on the menu. I had not looked at the menu, so when the FA said "pancakes" I said yes!

We landed in Singapore on time, even a few minutes early. The lines at arrival security screening were not long at all; the line at immigration was also not long. I made a stop to exchange some US dollars for Singapore dollars (exchange rate 1.193, collected my bag, and hopped in a taxi for the ride into the hotel (S$17).

The ride into the city is really lovely. Along the roadway there are lovely flowers, shrubs, trees, all very very green and tropical. The temp is 88 today, and very sunny. Perfect!

At the front desk at the Intercontinental, I was asked for my passport and my reservation was verified. Then I was shown to the Club Lounge to complete my check-in, since I had upgraded to a Club Lounge Floor room (although the lounge is on the 2nd floor and my room is on the 8th floor).

My room is not nearly as small as I had pictured, after reading comments about small rooms at this hotel. I've been in much smaller hotel rooms than this one. This one is much better than I had expected. Plenty of space for me! I have a walk-in shower, plus a soaking tub, free internet, lots of channels on the flat screen TV, and a good supply of teas and coffee and bottled water. There is also a fresh fruit plate which has appeared on the table while I was out walking around the neighborhood.

I went exploring the area within a few blocks of the hotel. No hop on/off bus yet. No MRT yet. Just getting the feel of the area right outside the hotel lobby. We are connected to a shopping complex that appears to cover a couple of blocks of retail space. Nice! Not your big name brands, but some interesting shopping none the less, and lots of options for dining as well.

Back to the hotel after my walk-about, and then off to the lounge where I met Craig and Jeane. All in all, a good start to my 3-day visit to Singapore.

I will probably take the hop on/off bus tomorrow, just to get an idea of things I'd like to investigate a bit further.

The bed here looks really comfy! Hoping to sleep a bit more than the 5-6 hours per night that I've been doing since arriving in HKG back on Thursday! Jet lag can be a bummer.

Enjoy your day!

Carol

Carol, you have email.

Still following along. You must have the record for attending fodorite gtg's. Have you ever figured out how many gtg's you have been to and how many fodorites you have met yet? I'll bet it's a bunch of them.

Aloha!

Good morning, Carol - hope to see you again later today.

I think the rooms are spacious enough, although we could use a double sink and a bit more room in the bath...

the hop on hop off stop is just opposite the side door to the hotel...ask the doorman... we went to their origination point a few blocks away to start our trip...

there is a young man at the club desk who is one of the nicest guys we have ever met travelling... i think he was the only man... talk to him for some interesting observations..

What a great day in SIN!! I started out with breakfast, and time to chat a bit with Craig and Jeane before they started out on their adventures today. I wasn't really sure where I'd end up when I started out the door. (I think Bob is having a stroke reading that, as he plans every minute, and does it months ahead... haha... sorry Bob, I had to do that)

Well, I asked the kind older gentleman who showed me to the lounge when I checked in, and who got brochures for me, if he thought I needed a taxi as the best way to get to the Peranakan Museum. He said I could easily walk (about 15 minutes) and then showed me the way. Very easy to find. I paid my S$6 and had a nice look around for about 1 hour. The kibayas and sarongs are absolutely stunning! I particularly like the delicate lace ones. Guenmai, you are right. They are priceless. I enjoyed finding out about the Peranakan culture and all its various ethic roots.

When I left the museum, I took a taxi, asking the driver to take me to Peranakan Place, just past Orchard Road. I wanted to have a look at more kebayas. But,the driver told me that it is being torn down (if I understood his very difficult accent!!!) so I had him take me to the Tang store on Orchard Road, which is connected to the Marriott Hotel. I did pass the place where the Peranakan Place should be, and yes it appeared that construction was going on. I walked up Emerald Hill Road and looked at some of the small shops there. This is a Peranakan area of the city.

Orchard Road is amazing!!! OMG!!! What an array of stores and malls and shopping centers. And it is so lovely and green with trees and shrubs. I really enjoyed myself, walking down Orchard Road from Tang to Orchard Plaza. I made a number of stops along the way, to window shop.

One interesting stop was at the big Rolex building. I thought it was a store, but inside is not a showroom. There are two small seating areas, where I guess you ask someone to bring something to the first floor to show you. It is a store, but not like any other Rolex store I've ever been in. I guess this is for security reasons?? They probably have millions of dollars in inventory there.

Well, I had a reason to stop at this store. I own (and am wearing right now) a watch from the 1970s called the Rolex Chameleon. It is not your typical oyster watch. Rolex does not make the Chameleon anymore, and has not made it for years. They should though... I get compliments on it all the time when I wear it.

Anyway, the chameleon uses interchangeable leather watch bands in a myriad of colors. Since my watch is from the late 70s, you can imagine that the leather bands get worn out. Over the years I have bought a number of leather bands. The last time I bought them was a long time ago, and I really thought I'd never see them offered for sale again, ever.

I asked the girl at the counter about the bands, and surprise surprise. She said YES they sell them! She phoned someone who then brought down about 6-8 different colors. They were exactly what I was looking for. I considered buying two colors. But then I got the details of the sale:

Each band costs S$117. And they do not have the golden buckle to fasten the band onto your wrist. The golden buckle, with a Rolex crown emblem on it (gold PLATED not 14K), is another S$120. Hmmm... they used to cost $25 and they came with a buckle. Times do change, don't they? Long story short, I did NOT buy a couple of bands, even though they were something I never thought I would find again in a million years.

After the Rolex store, I stopped for lunch at TCC for a choco mint frappe and a shrimp dish. Very tasty. Just right. I like the small portions served here in Singapore!!

Time for the hop on hop off bus. I got my ticket and hopped on the bus at Orchard Plaza. The ride was really pleasant on the upper deck, but under the shade canopy. The sun is very intense here.

I saw the Singapore Flyer and the Marina Sands. I also saw China Town, Little India, and some really interesting architecture. I found places to go back to tomorrow. My ticket is good until 10pm this evening, so I could hop back on again, and take another ride. I probably will not do that though.

It is nearly time to go to the Club Lounge for drinks and snacks. I will make a meal out of the food offerings again, just like I did last night. Craig and Jeane will be there. I am anxious to hear about their shopping experience today.

Tomorrow, the botanic gardens and then China Town. I really want to go and explore Peoples Park Center, and then go to Clarke Quay and maybe get a boat ride. We'll see.

I really like Singapore. It is beautiful and clean! I am 100% certain I will come here again in the near future. I might stay along Orchard Rd next time though.

Ken, Nick's place is not open yet. He will be at the far end of soi 7/1 on the right side of the soi. Same name, PL. I think Maeng may open before he does. I will see her place when I get back from SIN. Dr Jack says he thinks Nick will have a successful business there. Not sure about Maeng. I want her to succeed!!! She has worked so very hard all of her life. This is her last chance to make it on her own.

Ken, re Mustaff. It's on my list to go back to today, as well as the zoo, possibly the botanic gardens, and China Town and a boat ride. It's gonna be a really busy last day here! Whew!!! I love Singapore. Will be coming back again and again, I think. I think I like it better than HKG because it's so very GREEN here. Trees and shrubs line the boulevards everywhere.

Bob, Orchard Rd blew me away. It is an interesting mix of the big brand names and big shiny malls, but the more interesting places are also squeezed in there... the China Town sort of places with taylors, cheap bling jewelry, etc. THAT's what I like! Oh, and I really like the Tang Department Store. Might have to get back there.

Bon Voyage to Craig and Jeane now. They should be sitting upstairs in the upper deck for their long ride back to HKG and ORD, and then back to Hartford, but maybe in econ?? Craig was wondering if they would take away their upgraded seats for that short haul flight. Hope they can ride up front!

Yesterday (Wednesday) was loads of fun. I started with the zoo. I enjoyed the orang exibit. They are my faves.

Then off the Clark Quay and then a short walk to China Town from there. I really enjoy this short of shopping, with exotic foods (which I don't eat, but they look interesting), exotic smells, etc. I mostly looked, only picking up a few of the 3 for $S10 watches. Very colorful and cute styles.

I went back to my hotel for a quick break, read the newspapers that are stacked on my desk, and then off again. I headed to Little India... Mustafa Center. OMG. This place is something you have to see to believe. It is packed with people, packed with items of all kinds, and aisles are narrow. It's rather like the catacombs at MBK, except more organized. Fascinating! There are 4 or 5 floors, each one the size of a city block, just about. Amazing place! I bought some tea for a friend back home. Not adventurous, I know.

I walked from Mustafa Center all the way back to my hotel. I walked thru Arab neighborhoods, Indian neighborhoods, local markets with wares spread out on the ground for all to see. It was an interesting walk that took me about 45 minutes. Next time I'd grab a cab, but this was a good look at SIN.

Leaving today. I'll be back again, I'm sure. I really like this city/country. It is so green and rainforest-like. It is comfortable for walking. I think the touts of HKG are not really allowed here in SIN. If you want to buy something, you have the option of stopping and looking. Virtually no one (with a few exceptions) approached me to take a look. I was offered lots of brochures on the other hand, which I declined to take.

Gotta run. More when I'm back at my home away from home.

Carol

Did you get over to East Coast Parkway where the Paranakan shops are? Remember I wrote about Rumah Bebe boutique. Plus, the Paranakan Hawkers' stands are along that same street which serve Paranakan food. Happy Travels!

guenmai... No, I didn't get to the East Coast Parkway. I'm just glad I managed to make it to the Paranakan museum, which was very interesting. My time in SIN was not very long, and there was just only so much time to squeeze in as much as possible. I will return, I'm sure. SIN is very lovely. I appreciate the time you took to tell me about the Paranakan places. You must have typed for hours. Next time, guenmai. There was just too much to see for a first-timer to SIN, hitting the 'must see' places in a little more than 2 days. Not easy! And I didn't get to the botanic gardens yet, and hat was really #1 on my list! What can I say?

I'm back in BKK, waiting for my room to be cleaned at AS. I'm on my computer in the lobby, drinking coffee and eating cookies. I've spoken with Maeng and will go to her new place tonight at 7pm. Can't wait to see it.

It's good to be back in BKK!
