help with clothes for December's trip to Tokyo!
Hi everyone
I just don't know what to take for our trip to Japan in a few days (Dec 22). We'll be in Tokyo and Kyoto.
I know Japanese women are very fashion-oriented. I don't want to look from another planet with my big winter down jacket.
I was planning to take my UGGS boots, since it's going to be cold, but I'm afraid to look silly in these.
Please help!

You won't see too many down jackets in the big cities, and fashionable rather than functional boots are the norm. It's not that cold...above freezing in temperature, but it can feel colder with wind or rain. IMO it's not cold enough for a down jacket in Tokyo and Kyoto. In Kanazawa, in 12 years, I haven't had a truly warm jacket, just a quilted long coat from LL Bean, and I'm plenty warm enough (and obviously no slave to fashion).
Japanese fashion is definitely form over function, but it's really only the younger people who dress "in fashion" - older than high school (their fashion is uniforms) and younger than 30 or so.
The rest, dress nicely, maybe with more focus on designer labels than cutting edge fashion. Dress nicely and neatly and you'll be fine.
Bring layers....temperature can change a lot during the day, warm if there is sun, and cold if there is no sun.

Had to buy boots here as I wanted to replace my old ones & was very surprised that both fashionable & functional ones were available in abundance in most of the shoe stores I visited. UGGS look alikes are also everywhere. Big change from my last Winter here 2 years ago. Most of them are made in China with the exception of the $200-$500 ones made in Japan & Italy.
I need to use a lot of layers here in Tokyo- scarves, gloves come in handy when I move about in the trains & buses depending on the day. Just bring at least one of each so you won't have to buy them here. If you prefer, you can get them at the 100 yen store if you need them. If I had a down jacket, I would probably use it.
Agree with Kim about varying temperatures- Thanksgiving week was cold- however, for the past 3 days, we hardly even used our space heaters here at home.

I also heard Japanese women were fashionable and Japan is a nice place for shopping.
I think it will be good to enjoy shopping there. All the shops are having Christmas sale with discount at that season.
