The Oberoi is modern whereas the Imperial has retained its British Colonial character. We liked the location of the Imperial since we could walk across the street to the Cottage Industries Emporium. It was also centrally located for visiting the major sites.
The Oberoi is a little out of the way. It has a small arcade attached with mostly upscale mall-type stores that you could find anywhere in the world with the exception of Ravissant Jewelers which we liked. It is not really within walking distance of anything however.
We had a huge suite at the Imperial. We had originally booked a Heritage room but we were upgraded after we got bumped from staying there our first night. I have heard that the cheapest rooms aren't that great but we thought the Imperial was a wonderful hotel.
I know that the Delhi Oberoi is not of the standard of the super-lux Vilas properties but I have not stayed there so can't comment further.

I have recently returned from Delhi.
I stayed at the Oberoi. It was excellent.
I was on a Oberoi package so didnt consider the imperial. I went to the Imperial for lunch but must say I didnt see any major differences. Obviously i didnt see the rooms there.
Whatever you do you must eat at the Indian restaurant in the Oberoi Delhi, it is quite sensational.

Stayed here in August and again in December. I loved the Imperial; the location is teriffic and there is lots of stuff going on nearby, including the Cottage Industies Emporium. Hanuman Temple nearby is fun too, especially if you want to have your hands done in Henna.
The new pool and spa should be done by now. I recommend a heritage room or at least a room off the ground floor.
If you like to eat breakfast, have it included. They have full english style buffet and made to order Indian items. Come to think of it, all of our meals in the Imperial were wonderful...Spice Route, room service, cafe 1911 (?). I'm getting hungry just thinking of it!

Both are very nice hotels so I don't think you would be unhappy in terms of the quality of the rooms or the service. I agree with Craig that the location of the Imperial is much better in that you can walk to things like the Connaught area and you can also walk in the other direction to the Rajpath area. As you will be there in January when the weather is so excellent and you actually can and will want to walk to places, I would pick the Imperial. There is also so much history attached to the place, you are walking in the footsteps of viceroys and Nehru. I also like the more expansive lawns and open feeling of the gardens at the Imperial. To sum it up while I sometimes stay at the Oberoi for business, but would always choose the Imperial for pleasure when holidaying in Delhi.
