Japan: Luggage questions
Hi,
I am trying to learn more about the luggage situation in Japan. I have read about many services that transport your luggage. I am wondering if people only do this from hotel to airport, or do they also utilize it to go from city to city?
If the service is used to go from city to city, I am wondering if my itinerary will lend itself to the service. We will be traveling from Kyoto to Takayama area to Nagoya to Mt Fuji to Tokyo. Would it make sense to send some luggage ahead from Kyoto to Mt Fuji?
Thanks you!

Yes, it does make sense. The luggage delivery is not just to/from the airport. If you want to ship from one hotel to the other then you should find the address, in Japanese, for the 2nd hotel and have a person from the 1st hotel help with the shipping form.
You could also leave your luggage at Nagoya station while traveling to Takayama and then pick it up when you return from Takayama. But the lockers at Nagoya station are not that easy to find and could be full.
There are some runs of the Hida train to Takayama that go from Kyoto all the way to Takayama, so it would not be absolutely necessary to make a connection on that leg of the trip.

I know you wouldn't know exactly but can you give me an appox of how much it costs? Also, from my reading it looks like it takes about 1-3 days to arrive depending on how far. Would you agree? thanks again!

Hi, AJ605!
I visited Japan myself this past spring, and used the services of the luggage forwarders (takkuban) several times. It was great. The cost from hotel to hotel was about US$20 for 2 suitcases. Delivery was always the next day.
In addition, on my next to last day in Japan, I sent my luggage ahead to Narita and reclaimed it near the check-in counters (Luggage Claim area).
Whatever you decide, enjoy the trip. (by the way, YOU do not need to know the Japanese name of your destination. The staff at the luggage forwarding desk all have PC software programs that convert the hotel names from English to Japanese.)

Baggage delivery service is available from anywhere to anywhere within Japan at a reasonable cost. Your hotel will be able to help you with the forms and payment. Keep in mind that it isn't practical to send baggage that you will need immediately. It always takes an overnight. It is better to pack lighter as a tourist I think.
