Kintamani
My girlfriend and I, both 45, are due to arrive in Ubud at the end of the month. I am working to organize a few tours and am not sure whether to simply hire a driver to take us or go with a tour to Kintamani. We are not interested in renting a car. My question is, most of the tours to Kintamani found on line seem to start in or near Batubulan and take you to some dancing show then to Celuk, Batuan, Mas and maybe Bedulu then to up Kintamani; does this allow enough time to visit the artisanal villages and allow enough time for shopping - without feeling like a herd of cattle? While I understand that Bali is small, I have heard that routes are not always well paved and that it can take much longer to reach your destination. The tours I am finding are between 8 - 9 hours. If you have gone with a tour and were satisfied - or not - please advise.
Thank you.
Thank you.

Hiring a car and driver is relatively cheap in Bali. No reason to be herded about with a tour group. With your own car and driver, you go where you want to go, stay as long as you want to stay. Like you, I wouldn't rent a car on Bali, but I'm glad to hire a car and driver.

Thank you, Kathie. Do I need to hire a driver before I get to Bali or is it possible to get one once I'm there, say through the Bed & Breakfast we'll be staying with. I do have another connection but communication with this individual has not been consistent. Thank you.

It is very easy to hire a driver on the spot in Bali. Someone at your B&B will have an uncle, brother, or cousin who is a driver. Some people feel they want/need to hire a driver in advance, but I've always hired drivers on the spot and have had good experiences with them.

Good to know, Kathie. Ever the planner, I get nervous heading to the other side of the world without a plan. Whether it works or not, it gives me a sense of security. I have been to Asia a few times and things always work out yet I have yet to travel abroad and leave my activities to serendipity. Oh, couldn't that be the trip of a lifetime! I'll worry about a driver once my friend and I are in Bali. Thank you!
