1) Being at a Hanshin Tiger's baseball game At Osaka Dome last March. My son and I had already seen the Tiger's play the Tokyo Giant's at Tokyo Dome the week before, and we were so impressed w/the Tiger's fan's spirit that we bought alot of Tiger's team clothing- hats, shirts, short yukata jackets, noisemakers, etc. We wore it all to the game the next wk. at Osaka Dome. This was a rainy mid-week afternoon game but the ENTIRE fan section was full, and there was a cheerleader leading the die-hard fans through personalized cheers for every batter that came up; there were all kinds of fan rituals and controlled insanity going on.
A Japanese woman tapped me on the shoulder during the 6th inning stretch and pointed to the big video screen in the Dome, and my son and I were on it! The fans went nuts, seeing two gaijin dressed completely in Tiger's team clothes. The other fans sitting around us gave us thumbs up and two came over and bowed to us! What a memory.

2) Seeing a xenotrope for the first time at the Ghibli in the outskirts of Tokyo. I stood in front of it for a total of over one hour, watching it go over and over and over. It was pure magic.

A few of mine:

1) Tokyo - Watching my son walk towards me in Ginza after he'd been in Japan for 6 months (I wanted to squeeze his face but managed to just grab a nice long hug.)

2) Kyoto - Hana Toro with my son and his girlfriend the night was magic and we were the only gaijin in sight.

3) Saijo - Walking with my son's girlfriend behind my husband and son who were talking and laughing and hugging each other every couple of steps. Ok, maybe they'd had a little too much sake, but the affection was unmistakable and real.

4) Outside Jaco, Costa Rica - Whizzing through the air 150 feet up in the trees. It was awesome!!! And over far too soon. I could have gone again. Funny thing, every picture of me while I'm flying through the trees - I have a HUGE smile on my face. Also, my husband, who is really afraid of heights went with, and enjoyed it too.

5) Outside Jaceo, Costa Rica - collecting 50,000 year old fossils with my sister while on a sea kayak/snorkle trip.

6) St. Salisbury, Kent - Watching a blizzard in February from a room that was 3/4 windows. It was beautiful. Oh, and laughing at all the London folks who could barely drive in 3 inches of wet snow - with manual transmissions! If we hadn't been on the wrong side of the road, I'd have had my husband take over.

7) Outside Santa Fe, Anasizi cliff dwellings - sitting inside one and thinking that long, long ago someone actually LIVED here.

8) Sonoma - Sitting in wet grass at Chatau St. Jean having a picnic and not caring that it looked like we had all wet our pants when we got up.

9) Looking down from a rooftop hotel dining room in Puerto Vallarta and seeing all of the wash hanging, and the chickens and dogs in the yards directly below.

10) The fact that my then 10 and 12 year old sons had such faith in my "Plan" that they NEVER went off on their own for our whole week at Disney. Ok, it's not an exotic place, but come on - I kept telling them they could do what they wanted and they wanted to stay with mom! Sometimes it really pays to be a planner.
