I think Sarawak will be difficult to properly visit in just a few days, especially if you happen to get there during a rainy period. I would recommend Melaka, which, along with Penang and Singapore, is one of the former British straits settlements. The food is wonderful and varied in Melaka, and the old part of the city is very easly explored on foot over a 1 or 2 day stay. If possible, try to be there on the weekend for the Jonker's Walk night market in Chinatown.

Hey Chris, We live near Half Moon Bay....not that far away from Benicia. Small world, of course.
We chose the Santa Grand Hotel in Chinatown for Singapore. I wanted something not too pricey and in an interesting neighborhood since we won't be there long enough to spend time running all over.
I'll probably email Ken since you say he's been recommended on here. I want someone to pick us up in KL and get us to the "Palace" and then use him for a day tour or trip too possibly. I have had to back off on the planning for awhile to get other things handled, so now might get back to the small details. It took a long time to figure out all the hotels and where to go and for how long....
Then I let my husband do the in-country flights and that a whole morning to get booked. Whew. But I'm excited and think this will be a great trip!

patt711-Ys,you are pretty close. This whole trip has been a lot of planning. I chose the Conrad Centennial for Singapore. I read reviews from TripAdvisor & they rated high-we have 4 nights there. The rate was pretty good &I'm a Hilton points member. I felt the one way flights within SEAsia were pretty high-oh well. I lucked out to get 3 timeshares so that takes a load off.
I feel this site is the best for travel info. Have fun planning-I am writing notes all the time. Did you contact Ken? Chris

Hi Chris,
I've written to Ken and he wrote that he's in the middle of something and will get back to me as soon as he can. Have you priced the ride from the airport to the Palace of GH with both Ken and the resort? That's what I'm working on now.
Then I have to see where else we need a ride from airports to hotels...I think we're set in Penang, but not anywhere else.
I took a break for awhile after going full tilt on it for a month or two...now have to get back into it and get this next part done. We're only using the one timeshare for this trip. I prefer to stay for shorter times rather than a week in each.
Patt

Cameron Highlands is not very interesting imho. Usually foggy and wet. Seen one tea plantation you've seen 'em all. The islands off Semporna in Sabah are pretty nice. We stayed at Mabul and my friend Shelley dived at Sipadan. I snorkled as my ears were painful. It's a refreshing change from cities and mountains and somewhere unique. Turtles swim right up to you! Water off wharf so clear and lots of friendly fish. We stayed at Skuba Junkies resort called Mabul Beach Resort. The food included in rate and darn good too!

Thanks, Lyndie...I think we might skip Cameron Highlands. We would like to spend a day or part of one in Malacca, but would like to combine it with someplace else. Does anyone have a suggestion?
Thanks.

I'd say that Malacca is well worth a day trip from KL. It doesn't give you a lot of time there, but you'll get a taste. Consider spending a night there.

If you plan to go to Singapore, Malacca (Melaka) is a good stop on the way from KL. The train is a good way to get there from KL (taxi into town from the train station) then on to Singapore by coach from the station in town. Do have at least one overnight in Malacca. Well worth it.

About how long a train trip is it from KL to Melaka? We're actually not staying right in the city, we'll be at the Mines Resort area, which is south of KL and closer to Melaka. Maybe a train trip there and an overnight stay, then back to the resort? We have a week there, but could spend one night away. Does anyone know if there's a train stop near that resort?

See:

You can also go by bus - long distance buses in Malaysia are very comfortable.

patt-I am not sure how we are to get to Golden Palace as we have a week first at Golden Palms-a resorts on stilts on the water. Need to work that out-I am hoping that timeshare will shuttle us to our hotel & not the airport. Good luck. My husband & |I are off tho |Maui this Sat. Chris

I am going to be heading to the Perhentians in July, can you recommend some wonderful accommodation there? I heard the snorkeling is very good; that's why I'm going. Thanks for your feedback; it is much appreciated.
