What a fabulous response from so many familiar Fodorites! Great to hear from you all and thanks for the feedback.
Icuy, so good to hear from you. Perhaps you and your daughter Elyse will consider doing a mother-daughter volunteer teaching stint someday like Alissa and I?! It would really be a wonderful way to spend some quality time with your young adult daughter and do something meaningful for the grateful Cambodian people.
I'm hoping that Theresa and Mariana will also write up a trip report about their shared mother-daughter experience in Siem Reap! Theresa also has some terrific video footage of their time at Chay School (along with the 7 other volunteer teachers who were placed there) as well as great photos.
And yes, we are planning to attend the Boston GTG this year...will you be there, Icuy? Hope to see you then! And to see gpanda, bob, craig and jeane, and the rest of the gang.
Alison, good to hear from you again on this site. How did the rest of your trip go? If you've written a trip report, would love to see it. I will always remember meeting you and your husband at Angkor Wat on that steamy Sunday...and then running into other Fodorites there, Jenni and Bob, minutes later. One of you was with Ponheary, and the other was with Dara whom we just saw at the Marina Villa Guesthouse (the Lys, that is) that morning earlier. I chuckled internally over the chatty social GTG we were all having along the long corridor...as that's how I feel when I go shopping at our local Whole Foods and run into people there...but it was way out of context for this to be happening too at Angkor Wat, so funny, really!

Alison, I just came across your trip report and thank you for writing such a detailed and open report. It's good to hear a range of experiences and opinions from travelers who visit the same part of the world... and that's the value of this website!

Terry it was so good to finally meet you and Alissa in person. "Thank You" doesn't seem like big enough words to convey our appreciation for the amazing job you did with the kids at Knar School. You made their first experience with volunteers a positive one.
For them, the thing that sticks, is that someone CAME. Someone showed up, sought them out, wrapped their arms around them and let them know they are not alone. This selfless act goes further than any other thing we can do. Those bright eyes and big smiles of theirs is the only way they know how to convey their gratitude, and I'm happy that you were able to receive that message.
And thanks for taking over my english classes in the evening, so I could lounge around and relax! Ha.
I sincerely hope our paths will cross again some day. The best part of working with Ponheary in Cambodia is meeting the absolute best of this world's citizens.

Lori,
It was our pleasure really...and a real pleasure to finally meet you too after all these months of email exchanges! With your availability and assistance to us volunteers all along the way, you made it easy for us. We felt so taken care of by you and the Lys and can't thank you enough!
You and Ponheary make quite the pair and complement each other well with your individual gifts and abilities. The Foundation is that much strengthened by your full involvement. Lori, you're the best!

Terry, yes, it was sort of surreal running into one another at Angkor Wat. And I'm so sorry I missed what sounds like a really memorable SR GTG!
Yes, our trip was great. If you get a chance, read the Vietnam portion as well -- we were there a lot longer than we were in Cambodia.
Seeing you and Alissa brought back such memories for me of visiting my daughter when she was volunteering in Botswana -- especially since our daughters are only a year apart. (Rachel is now 26; she was in Botswana for a semester when she was 20.)
Wish Alissa luck in grad school and let's plan to run into each other again on an equally exotic path somewhere in the world....
