Where in Asia this summer

Hello,
My mother and I want to go to Asia this summer. She is 66 y.o. We would like a mix of wildlife, culture, and some relaxation at the end (beach time?). We are interested in Borneo, Thailand, Vietnam, or India (tigers). Because my husband is not able to join us, he would like for us to go with a small group or guide. I am having trouble figuring out which area would be best weather wise and would fit our wants. Also, does anyone have a suggestions for a company that offers non-cookie cutter trips? I appreciate any and all help!

Hmmm... your husband wants you to go with a small group... but do YOU want to go on a group trip? You can easily arrange a trip on your own and do exactly what you want to do. If you'd like a driver or a guide in a particular place, it is easy to arrange on the spot. It's less expensive to make arrangements yourself, so for the same price as a small group trip you can stay in better hotels, etc.

India will be VERY hot at this time of the year. Borneo would be a wonderful place to see wildlife. Read my Borneo trip report for a few years ago. I highly recommend the Borneo Rainforest Lodge.

Thailand is the easiest country for a first-time traveler to Asia. You won't really see wildlife there, though.

For weather info see www.weatherbase.com

Hello again-
Thank you for the speedy replies. I thought I'd put the time frame in, but I see I didn't. Time frame is 2 or 3 weeks in June, July, or August. Budget- I'd love to keep it around $5,000, and no more than $8,000 for both of us. Small group or guide- well my husband is nice enough to let me globe trot all over the world without him, so if me being with a small group or a private guide makes him feel more comfortable about me going places without him then that is what I will do.
I will check out the Borneo trip report. I forgot to add on my list of wants 'wonderful photography sites', but I'm thinking that this may be standard no matter where I end up. Again, thank you so much for the help- I really appreciate it!

Hi Plumeria

India seems the perfect destination for you - all the ingredients that you want - are present here.

Wildlife parks -in plenty - Best ones to visit are Ranthambore in Rajsthan or Bandavgarh and Kanha in Madhya Pradesh.

Culture - available in plenty - Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, Udaipur, Jodhpour are all excellent places to visit and best for the first time travellers. Temples, palaces, colourful bazaars, Taj Mahal and other fascinating monuments, lakes, cenotaphs, camles, Elephants - eveeyhting can be seen during the visit here.

Beach stay - Goa, Kearla, Orissa etc etc - all have excellent beaches with nice hotels to chill out in.

You however need to be more clear about the timings of your tour since The wildlife parks close for visitors during monsoons - (from June end / July) - and also the beach destinations start receiving rains from June/ July too.

Depending on the time period of your travel - it shall be possibel to advise you more precisely abotu the places you can visit in India.

Take care and have a nice day

The summer is NOT a good time of the year for India for all the reasons mentioned by Holi - monsoons in some areas, stifling heat in other areas, closed wildlife parks...

It is very easy to set up guides where you need them without going on a small group trip. If you opt for Borneo, the Borneo Rainforest Lodge provides you a naturalist guide while you are there.

Asia is a high recommended to visit in the summer time. Java is the unique one with its cultures. Find out the places through the guide book such as lonely planet or others get the "Indonesia" which has many beautiful places. Safe journey!
