Personally I would drive the GOR myself rather than on a tour. But the main reason for that is that we like to linger at places we like and my hubby is a keen photographer so we will often scramble around a beach to take some photos so we don't like the possible time restrictions of a tour. I love the GOR area & Otways. Wonderful places to visit.

If you're hearing more votes for the Reef than Tasmania, it's probably because more people have been to the Reef than to Tasmania!
Naturally, the Great Barrier Reef is one of the prime attractions, and it's on every intinerary. Tasmania may be Australia's "best kept secret", but I have yet to find anyone who hasn't liked it once they've discovered it!
