Mareeba Wetlands

Here's a "heads up" for anyone planning on going to Mareeba Wetlands in Atherton Tablelands. I was reading old posts about Mareeba and Pat W. noted that it is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. We had it on the itinerary for a Tuesday, so glad we know that now and can change things around instead of getting there and finding it is closed. They also have the option of staying overnight there which was highly praised on Trip Advisor. Anyone have this experience?

Hi Sally,

We found out the hard way that it was closed on those days last time we were there. Actually, it wasn't that bad as it was more of a, hmm, there's an interesting sign let's see what's there kind of moment.

However, it was interesting just driving up to the gate, and we got cool shots of bustards in some of the fields on the road leading in so it was totally worth it.

We are now planning a 2007 trip and are going to make sure to go to the Mareeba Wetlands. We would also like to hear from someone who has stayed overnight there, in order to decide if we would also like to do that.

The web site describing the overnight does make it appealing!

Hi Sally and Toucan, Have been to Mareeba Wetlands in daytime and at sunset quite a few times but haven't overnighted at Jabiru Camp as its not too far from where I live. But have heard excellent reports from those who have.

Presumably you are planning to go later in the year? The Wetlands is closed for the wet season at the moment (and we are starting to get some lovely rain now - still with lovely sunny days in between!)and due to re-open at the beginning of April. It's well worth a visit and like Pat, although we haven't stayed overnight, have heard very good reports.

We will be in Australia in late November/early December. I think I remember Sally in Seattle saying they were going in October.

Lots of plan ahead types I think!
