I am not in NZ but I have been in the south island in early December and it snowed just outside Queenstown, was 4 degrees in Dunedin with Antarctic winds and fog. I think you should rethink your wardrobe with warm weather clothes ( just in case) and things that you can layer from there to keep you warm.
I agree with LizF - the weather down south is unpredictable at any time of the year. It can be VERY hot in Central Otago one day then they can have snow the next. They are forecasting heavy rainfall along the Westcoast tomorrow with showers over much of the South Island. Temperatures range from 14 - 19 degrees Celcius during the day.

Come prepared and enjoy!

nzers

You will love it - cold or not. Remember that if you take something windproof it goes a long way in keeping the warmth of any jumper in much better. Also spencers are invaluable too, not to mention Ugg Boots if you have any. You will want to climb up to the glaciers anyway and even take a heliflight which lands on one.
Just a tip for the flight: I take one of those striped blue and red bags with me and any bulky clothing such as coats or jackets I have over my arm and as soon as I am in the plane I put them into the bag and up in the lockers.
Have a great time
Now you have me at a loss. What is a spencer? Well its an undergarment which is sometimes called thermal underwear and usually has little sleeves and close fitting in a kind of stretch knit material. Thats about the best of my descriptive abilities I am afraid. I know that they have another name too so hopefully someone will come to my aid and help us both out with that name. The idea is that the more light layers the warmer you are without bulk.
When I lived in Canada I would often wear long stocking underneath slacks because just that added layer made such a lot of difference.
I am off too tomorrow on holiday - enjoy yours.
