Never stayed there so this is not a personal recommendation by the Y on the Park has a 2 bedroom apartment for $200 a night in December. Thats Aus $ of course. Otherwise check on Asiarooms.com. Hope you find something and have a great time. We are going next year and can't wait. Cheers

I was a bit stunned that anyone would suggest Asiarooms.com for accommodation in Australia and rightly so when I looked at the site as it has so few hotels on it.
Do a google search for Sydney accommodation and have a look at those in the suburbs particularly those near the beaches. December is peak season for part of that month of course and I would be booking now as you will find that there is nothing available if you leave it. I wonder though if you would not be better off staying outside of Sydney if money is a problem. To see what you may be able to get try looking on www.wotif.com.au as that will give you an idea of those hotel that are apartment hotels and can accommodate 4 people together for a reasonable price.
Another idea is to put a request post for help from ALAN who is an expert on the hotels in Sydney and he can always find one that is good value and low priced.

Sydney is expensive and I don't think they have on site vans in parks around Sydney but here are some ideas. Elsewhere they are cheap as chips.
Private holiday lets
http://www.sydney.stays.com.au/
Lane Cover River Tourist Park
Dural Tourist Park
Miranda Tourist Park
(will need a car for many cheaper options)
Also I mentioned on another thread that manly National Apartments have some good rates and are in a nice locations albeit not downtown.
As liz suggests to get a cheaper rate you may need to look outside central sydney but need to assess if extra charges in transport will be worth it.
Within central Sydney as suggested there are backpackers hostels, some of which are ok. Also apartments away from the harbour end of the city may be good value though check here to get response to locations.

It depends hugely on your exact dates for Sydney in December. Will they overlap either Christmas or New year? If yes - then book quickly!! If not you have a bit more breathing space.
Have you thought about a hostel? Would all 4 of you be happy sleeping in the same room?
Don't let the word "hostel" put you off. I've just checked Sydney Central YHA - which is hotel-like in its facilities and ambience - and double ensuite rooms are available for 7 consecutive nights in December at 100AUD give or take.
There are other places I could think of - but need to know what you mean by "nice" - and, like I said - what sort of sleeping arrangements would be your bottom line.
re a previous post - The Y on the Park is somewhere I've never stayed at either - but a friend has - and was happy - and it's well located for the price - and 200 bucks Australian for a 2 bed apt sounds like a bargain.
If you need cheaper - then post again.

Sometimes you can find apartments that book by the week, and this can reduce your costs considerably. One that I like a lot is Carrington Apartments, right near Wynyard Station.... worth checking out if their per week rates gave you better value for money than single night rates elsewhere. They won't be as cheap as on-site vans, or pub-style accommodation in the suburbs (where you can stay for $150 a week), but the Carrington is extremely well-appointed, and, of course, you're only five minutes from everything.
