Rental car companies
My husband and I will be renting a car for 3 1/2 weeks, and I have been checking rates. We've never rented an "older" car in other countries before, and are concerned with reliability and high milage. Has anyone had a bad experience with these? Of course, they are so much cheaper than the international companies, and we like the price!
Apex and Nova are quite a bit higher than Ace and Omega. I have seen recommendations on this board for Apex, but is anyone familiar with the others? If they are all about equal, then naturally we would prefer Ace or Omega.
Any info would be appreciated.

We have been checking older cars as we think we need to rent for a longer period. Found great rates with PHD. Trouble is with older cars quite often they do not want you to go far. 50km radius.
I would guess you are headed to Brisbane from a google on these companies. If their web address ends with .com.au then they should be fine.
Normal used car rates start at about $28 per day for a midget car.

We rented from Rite Price Car Rentals, a local company. We got a 'backpackers special' and it was a 6 year old Toyota hatchback.
It was small and didn't have a lot of pickup on the mountain roads. But not because it was older! WE were very pleased with it.
THe price was right and we drove it all over the north and south island.
You could also try USAVE in Auckland.
