Room rental or camp site in Sydney

My husband and I arrive in Sydney in early May and are looking to rent a room for two weeks whilst we buy a campervan or stay at a campsite. Can anyone help? We have a really really tight budget (i.e. $150 per week for both of us) for accommodation. Does anyone know of anyone that rents a room - we just need a bed for the night really!

Thanks

If that is US$ then you should have no problem getting a caravan on site for that price but I would say that you won't be in a really pick position. Perhaps you could do a Google search on Sydney short term accommodation and caravan sites and go from there.

Hi, Dill!

At last, somebody who wants to see Sydney on a budget! Actually, I don't think you'll have much trouble finding a room at that price, so long as you avois the chains and avoid anything tagged "motel". The suburbs are, of course, cheaper than the city (Strathfield and Lidcombe might be two places to check out)but I do know of one hotel right near Central Station that has a sign up offering rooms at exactly the price you asked for -- and this is Aussie dollars, not US dollars: look at http://www.strawberryhillshotel.com.au/

The Duke of Cornwall Hotel, near the Powerhouse Museum, had a similar sign about two years ago, but it's not as nice (from the outside), and I don't know if that rate is current any more. The Strawberry Hills hotel also had a sign offering $5 steaks, which might help your budget along also. It's not in a beautiful part of Sydney, you understand, but it's only 300 metres from Sydney terminal Station, so it's quite handy.

Caravan Parks: the one at Bass Hill used to be a "good buy", though it's quite far from the city and not very near a railway station. For tents, there are campsites near the beaches at various points, but be warned -- the sea breeze is often a strong wind, and this doesn't always make for pleasant long-term tenting!

Hope this has been of some help... if your $150 was in US dollars, you can go a little upmarket from these suggestions, and I would suggest maybe Whelan's Hotel at Strathfield Station (there are a couple of other places in that immediate neighbourhood also).

Hi, again, Dill!

I checked the Strawberry Hills website again and found that their $150 per week rooms are all SINGLE rooms, so I guess that's out. The Duke of Cornwall or the one at Lidcombe (in the suburbs, but right at the station) are starting to shape up as the most likely starters. The Lidcombe Hotel doesn't have its own website (when I tried, I was directed to the Best Western Motel, a much pricier prospect), but the phone book lists them at 9649 8677; might be worth ringing them to negotiate. Strathfield Private Hotel is 9746 0334. I can't find Whelan's Hotel, Strathfield, listed as such, but it is probably just called "Strathfield Hotel" in the phone book, in which case its number is 9747 4630, and its fax is 9747 2484. There's a third establishemnt also in that neighbourhood -- if neither of these can help you, mauybe they will know the name of the other one. Good luck!

If it had been last year, you could have had my studio flat for 150 aud - couldn't find anyone interested then!!
If it's 150 us then there are hostels which may have rooms at that price.
try www.bugaustralia.com.

I stayed at the Tremayne Private Hotel for a while in 1998 (it's listed on BUG) - current price is 240 AUD for a double, which is a little outside your budget - if it's in USD, and depending on the exchange rate. It has location going for it, being in the nearest suburb to the city on the north side of the Bridge - and access to transport (Milson's Point Stn); and it has outdoor areas to sit in, and a REALLY eclectic bunch of residents. It's not swish - and forget the included dinners!

There is also a campsite in Lane Cove National Park which (surprisingly) is in the metropolitan area. Unsure of transport connex or details. One for Google.

Over to you, and best of luck.
