G'day Liz and welcome home to soggy Q'd - wonderful to see some rain if it didn't all come at once.

Think this jet lag thing is taken a bit too far - once my husband Mike flew Sydney-New York for job interview, slept a few hours in an airport hotel (he had slept on the flight), had the interview and flew straight back to Sydney. And he got the job! Bit woozy for a while after he returned but nothing too bad.

I remember when I lived in Melbourne in the early 1990's and the US moprning show "The Today Show" was on just after midnight. Thus yesterday's Today show was always on tomorrow.

Think about that one!

I think for hotel very budget room for you ! Where the action is !

Sounds like me so if I was coming to Sydney (rather than live here) I would stay at

Cronulla - ok far out but on the train line so only 40 mins into town but lots of cafe, restaurants - Beach/suburban scene

Glebe - Older side of sydney with cramped housing, historic/shabby feel with book shops and cafes and old pubs - = close to down town - bus transport - university student scene

Coogee - fairly close to city, good restaurants, pubs, transient scene (backpackers, aussie transplants, single yuppies)

Paddington - yuppie/trendy/ renovated pubs. renovated people, good markets. Hee hee. lots os people watching. Inner city, close to gay capital etc etc.

I am still considering Sydney but a lot of people have told me to go to Melbourne instead. So whats the difference? As far as Jet Lag goes, I may be in Singapore for about 3 or 4 days before I get to AUS so I will be more in tune with the time zone.

If I were to choose Melbourne OR Sydney - it would have to be Sydney - hands down!!

The city offers much more - as to hotels - you can stay wherever and take the train or bus to any place you'd like to go.

We booked corporate housing for two weeks and we got a much better rate doing that. With an apartment we were able to cook a few meals as we wished and ate out for others. As to places that I would avoid - avoid Kings Cross and take Alan's advice it's always great.

We've also been in OZ in March and in September - both were great - September was much cooler.

I believe the time difference from the east coast is 14 hours - that's where we're from. You're realize the time difference on your return trip not on your trip to OZ.

This has been going for a long time and I have not changed my mind - Sydney it would be then, now or in the future - hands down.
As for a place to stay in Sydney - Paddington, Coogee, Glebe or Cronulla YIKES!!!!!!!
I presume that you want a good memory of Sydney? So perhaps you should do a search on this site and type in Alan - which is for Alan Jarman who lives and writes about Sydney and has the best ideas for cheap inner Sydney accommodation there is. He has checked out the places he has recommended and they are fine, possibly not fancy but cheap and good. One that he has mentioned before is very handy to just about everything especially the train which will get you to anything and most everywhere. You can also get day tickets in Sydney which will give you travel on Ferries, buses and trains.
I think anywhere outside the confines of the city is a big pain in the butt especially Cronulla as its a like being in NY but living in Croton on Hudson and having to go back and forth an hour a time. Glebe - well its ok if you like walking to transport most of the day, Paddington ( the least said the better )
Coogee - still to far for accessability.

Richard, I am going to put in my 2 cents worth. I just got back from 18 days in 6 different cities. The jet lag wasn't too terrible. Just give yourself a little nap after you get there unless you can sleep well on an airplane. It is a 14 hour flight from California and I flew another 6 hours before that. After a short nap we felt pretty good. It was actually worse coming back, trying to get our body clocks back on track. Anyway-I think you should definitely go to Sydney. It is by far the best city that I visited. I would also go to the Great Barrier Reef. I had 3 days in each and loved every minute of it. The time difference is 16 hours ahead of our Eastern Standard time. We were on an independent tour, so our hotel was already included. I stayed at the Menzies in Sydney. It is a little older hotel, but very nice and it had the perfect location for getting around. You might want to check on their rates. Have fun whereever you go.
